So, Marion County commissioners stuck with their earlier decision to convass the opinion of county voters about inviting Bob Knight and Co. to build a casino-resort here.
On the one hand, we don't blame the commissioners for wanting voters to have a say. But it's a shame to spend nearly $10,000 to vote on a pipedream that has about as much chance of becoming reality as landing a professional football team here. By the way, if we have to choose between those two, we'll take a football team any day of the year and twice on Sundays.
Coincidently, our front-page story on the commissioners' decision shares space with a story about the recent announcement that the Hillsboro Development Corp. is launching an innovative incubation program for new businesses. HDC's idea is to to focus on fledgling, locally owned companies that want to create a useful product or provide a helpful service at a fair profit.
What a quaint concept. The glamour of that approach sort of pales in the face of the get-rich-quick philosphy that fuels the operation of casinos, doesn't it? Anyone care to vote on HDC's approach to economic development?
