We are very pleased with the first month's results of our Keep It in the County promotion. The receipts turned in for Oct. 12 to the end of the month represented about $65,000 in retail purchases from businesses located in Marion County. I believe there was at least one automobile transaction represented and the feedback we received from the participants was positive.
It is obvious from our latest promotion (which will be monthly, indefinitely) that our local merchants have a lot to offer and are eager to do business.
Last week we received a package in the mail from our grandson Alex. His class in school is learning about other states in the United States. Part of the deal is that "flat Alex" came to Kansas to look around.
Our job was to take "flat Alex" to see places of interest. The main request was to take him to the big slide in Memorial Park, which is a favorite attraction for the Cameli boys. There is nothing like it in Atlanta.
Flat Alex saw the scenic Flint Hills on the way to the big KU-Nebraska game in Lawrence this past Saturday. Flat Alex's dad is from Nebraska but went to KU. I think he is still a Nebraska football fan, though.
It was son Dan's idea to go to the game. He must have had a premonition of what was to happen. I can't thank him enough for the idea. The last time I saw KU victorious over Nebraska in Lawrence was in 1967 when Bobby Douglas was the quarterback.
What fun it was not just winning, but turning the tables in such a resounding fashion.
A couple of week's ago I took my mom to the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren women's program on the history of Mennonite Central Committee quilts and quilting. When I had taken her back into her room in Parkside Homes, one of the aides came and asked me if I had a black car. She said a purse was setting on top of a car out in the parking lot.
Sure enough, it belonged to my mom- but it wouldn't have fallen off because the strap was caught in the closed door.
We decided to take our own informal poll regarding the casino question that likely will be put to the county voters in a non-binding referendum later this month.
You can register whether you are for or against a destination casino coming to the county on www.hillsborofreepress.com on the first page that comes up by scrolling down the left side. The poll question is a simple check of "yes" or "no" and then "submit."
The last time I checked it was running 77 percent against and 23 percent for.
I was told that I had already done the joke about the chicken coupe. If you didn't notice, you're just like me.
