PARTLY NONSENSE - Fond memories of a neighbor PDF Print E-mail

Martha Scharping, my neighbor lady when I was growing up on Adams Street, died this past week at the age of 93. It has been many years ago that we lived next door but the bond I had with her never faded.

I have many pleasant memories of going to their house. She was quick with a smile and a laugh.

Later in life, our family lived in the same house the Scharpings did, which was a unique experience, too.

  • Scammers are everywhere. It is hard to fight them off and it is time-consuming as well.

We have leased copier/printer/scanner/fax units at both our Hillsboro and Hesston papers. The toner is included in both leases.

One day someone called and told us our equipment company is no longer providing the toner but that it will be coming from another source.

Sounded logical, but then when we get our toner we also got a bill. We called our original company and they said, "You just got toner scammed!"

When I called the bogus company, they were indignant that I was complaining about the scam. To shorten the story, I told them we were sending the toner back at their expense or we would keep it. They picked it up two days later.

  • Daylight-saving time is coming early Sunday morning. I think you are supposed to get up at 2 a.m. and set your clocks back. Then you have an extra hour to sleep or, if you forget, go to church an hour early and wait for everyone else to arrive.

  • I may be the only person in town who knows the answer to the following question: How many window panes of glass are there in the 100 blocks of North and South Main?

  • I read that scientists are now making medicine for one's specific DNA, which will make the medications much more effective (and expensive).

  • We "found" a good way to watch the ABC show "Lost." Just record a month's worth of episodes on the DVR and then watch several in about half the time. This method brings more continuity to the experience and frees up more time.

  • Many people already know that desserts and stressed have the same letters in reverse order. There is a name for it, but I don't care what it is. I'll have plenty of both, please.

  • I overheard someone say they were going out to buy the book, "Black Jack for Dummies." What does that mean?

  • The 100 blocks of North and South Main have 804 window panes. I started walking downtown now so that I am close to home if I need more or less clothes or get tired or hungry.
