Goessel Bluebird volleyball team headed for state tournament

Goessel- The Bluebirds earned a berth in the Class 1A state volleyball tournament Friday by winning their regional Saturday.
Goessel defeated South Haven in the semifinals, 25-27, 25-18, 15-19, and Marais-de Cygne Valley for the championship, 25-22, 25-19.
"All our players really stepped up today and played well," said first-year coach Crysta Guhr. "Overall, this was a great day for the Lady Bluebirds."
Kory Hiebert led the Goessel attack with 30 kills and 17 points on blocks.
"She really dominated the nets," Guhr said.
Courtney Berkholz added 18 kills and 15 digs.
Brianna Unrau was 32-for-32 serving with three aces while Rinda Duerksen went 26-for-26 with one ace. Brittany Voth added a 13-for-13 effort with one ace.
On Friday, Goessel will compete at Hays, where they'll battle Axtell, B&B Baileyville and Sharon Springs-Wallace County in pool play. The Bluebirds' first match will begin at 8:30 a.m.
Peabody-Burns-The Warriors lost in the semifinals of their sub-state tournament on Saturday.
In the opening match, the sixth-seeded Warriors defeated No. 3 Oxford, 25-16, 25-22.
Peabody-Burns led 16-10 and held on for the victory in the first game as Kara Gridley served for the final two points.
In Game 2, the Warriors led 8-7 before Becky Morris served for a 13-7 lead. After Oxford tied the game at 19-19, Jessica Gillet served the Warriors into the lead before Morris sealed the deal.
In the semifinals, Peabody-Burns lost to No. 2 Sedgwick, 21-25, 25-20, 23-25.
The Warriors led 11-2 in Game 1 before Sedgwick rallied to tie the game at 19-19. The game was tied at 21 before the Warriors' serving faltered down the stretch for the four-point loss.
In the second game, Peabody-Burns jumped to a 12-4 advantage as Jessi Hilliard served five straight points. The Warriors stretched the lead to 23-14 before holding on for the five-point win that sent the match to a decisive third game.
With the score tied at 19 in the rubber match, the Warriors lost the next two points before rallying to take a 22-21 lead.
The game was tied at 23 before Sedgwick scored the final two points of the match and ended the Peabody-Burns season.
"Kali Alstrom did an exceptional job of providing pace and decisions for the offense," coach Darren Schroeder said. "Becky Morris, Jessica Gillet, Jessi Hilliard and Traci Windsor all played great at the net, both offensively and defensively.
"This was a tough loss, but it was rewarding to see the girls leave everything on the floor."
Canton-Galva-The Eagles saw their season end in sub-state play, losing on Saturday to St. John, 25-12, 25-5.
