The Marion High School volleyball team improved to 9-8 for the season and 3-1 in the Mid-Central Activities Association Eastern Division by splitting matches with Smoky Valley Sept. 20.
Marion dropped the first match, 19-25, 25-20, 7-25, but took the second one, 22-25, 25-17, 25-20.
"I'm not sure how we turned it around after losing that bad in the third game," coach Kara Chisholm said. "We came out really flat in our first match and weren't really together as a team."
In the opener, Erin Richmond attempted 49 sets and was successful on 42.
"Erin does a great job of setting," Chisholm said. "As always, you can't expect a good set without a good pass, but she does a good job with the passes she gets. I'm very pleased with her."
The Warriors had 54 attack hits in the match resulting in 14 kills. Toni Gordon and Allison Maddox each had four kills.
Marion attempted 49 serves, made 44 and served four aces.
"Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with our serving," Chisholm said. "We did miss some pretty big serves at key times in the first match, which is always frustrating. But overall I'm not worried about our serving."
Defensively, Marion managed 27 blocks, led by Gordon and Maddox with two each.
The Warriors did commit 21 errors on digs and had 20 serve-receive errors.
"We still aren't doing well with serve receive," she said. "We didn't do very well at all at Smoky Valley. It can really be kind of a game-breaking thing and a lot of that depends on how the other team hits."
In the second match, Marion dropped the first game despite better play.
"We went into the locker room between matches and I told them what we needed to do and they came out and did it," Chisholm said. "It's just the whole team thing."
The rest of the night, Marion was in control.
Richmond was 27-for-37 on set attempts with seven assists. Erin Carr had 15 attack opportunities and converted five into kills. The team had 16 kills in the match.
"I'm very pleased with Erin Carr," Chisholm said. "She's played with Erin (Richmond) a lot and they know each other well.
"Toni Gordon and Emalee (Versch) are also both hitting the ball very well for us."
Marion hit 10 service aces in the match, led by three each from Megan Hudson and Versch.
On defense, the Warriors recorded 17 blocks, including three by Kari Tajchman.
The Warriors struggled once again on serve-receive, committing 16 errors.
With the season half over, Chisholm said things are progressing quite nicely.
"I'm surprised at how well we have come together considering most of these girls hadn't played together much before this season," she said.
"We're still learning who is going to fill what role, but that comes with playing experience."
