The Hillsboro High School varsity tennis team reached its highest pinnacle so far this season, tying for first with Circle at the five-team Circle Invitational Thursday in Towanda.
Even without playing two of their top players, Lora Andrews and Amanda Faber, the Trojans won both doubles flights as well as No. 2 singles. Their No. 1 singles entry placed third in the round-robin format.
Combined, the Trojans totaled 31 team points, as did the host team. Following them were Wichita Trinity with 18, El Dorado 11 and Augusta 9.
To win their title, Hillsboro's No. 1 doubles of Hannah Marsh and Amber Loewen defeated Katy Little and Suzanne Cook of Augusta, 8-3, Kate Bird and Chelsea Johnson of El Dorado, 8-6, Sydney Miller and Morgan Miller of Trinity, 8-6, and lost to Sarah Wellner and Cristin Petty of Circle, 6-8.
The No. 2 doubles team of Lauren Just and Chelsey Harmon defeated Rachel Morrison and Olivia Newfarmer of Circle, 8-3, Maddy Martin and Kristin Constance of Augusta, 8-1, and Sara Turner and Christine Gillett of El Dorado, 8-1.
"Both doubles teams did a nice job of taking charge at the net and finishing points," said coach Lynn Wiebe. "They scrambled well and stayed tough mentally."
Audrey Weinbrenner won the No. 2 singles title by defeating Katie Woods of Circle, 8-3, Crystal Martin of Augusta, 8-0, Andrea Ludson of El Dorado, 8-4, and Shiloh Jennison of Trinity, 8-2.
"Throughout the tournament Audrey used the court very effectively. She hit the ball from side to side and hustled to get the ball."
In No. 1 singles, Danielle Hagen placed third for Hillsboro. She beat Melissa Tatum of El Dorado, 8-0, lost to Brynne Mitchell of Trinity, 4-8, and Alex Woods of Circle, 2-8, then defeated Brooke Burns of Augusta, 8-4.
"Danielle hit the ball very solid and moved it around quite nicely," Wiebe said.
Junior varsity-While their varsity teammates were battling in Towanda, the Trojan junior varsity stayed home to compete in a quadrangular meet with Sacred Heart, Circle and Wichita Collegiate.
In No 1 singles, Anna Woelk lost to her Sacred Heart opponent, 6-8, and in No. 2 singles, Clara Ens lost to Sacred Heart, 2-8. The other two teams did not bring singles players to the event.
In No. 1 doubles, Tessa Simpson and Julia Loewen defeated Circle, 8-1, and lost to Collegiate, 2-8, and Sacred Heart, 6-8.
In No. 2 doubles, Maria Loewen and Kelsey Bartel defeated Circle, 8-1, lost to Collegiate, 3-8, defeated Sacred Heart, 8-7 (7-1).
Coming-The Trojans, who were scheduled to compete at Wichita Collegiate on Tuesday (Sept. 20), will play host to the Trojan Invitational on Thursday starting at 3:30 p.m., then will compete in Collegiate's Tournament of Champions on Saturday, with matches beginning there at 8 a.m.
