A couple of pivotal second-half plays gives Chapman the win over Hillsboro The Chapman Irish responded to a HIllsboro rally with two second-half touchdowns to give them a 27-13 victory Friday night in Chapman.

Chapman held the upper hand most of the night, with the Trojans nipping at their heels. The Irish scored first with a 10-play, 54-yard drive on their second possession of the game to take a 7-0 lead.

Hillsboro responded immediately with a 7-play 65-yard drive, fueled in part by a 15-yard unsportsman-like penalty on Chapman. Michael Suderman ran the final 15 yards into the end zone and David Funk added the PAT to tie the game at 7-7 as time ran out in the first quarter.

Chapman started the second quarter with a nine-play, 65-yard drive capped with a 17-yard touchdown run by Will Irvine with 8:58 left in the half. The extra-point kick was wide and Chapman led 13-7.

The score remained at 13-7 as the first half ended. Hillsboro dominated the early minutes of the third quarter, and tied the game on a six-play, 52-yard drive that culminated in a 3-yard touchdown run by Suderman with 4:59 left in the quarter. Funk missed the extra point to keep the game at 13-13.

Then, facing a third-and-five at their own 24, Chapman quarterback Jon Arveson landed a long bomb in the hands of Mark Snider for a 55-yard gain that put the ball on Hillsboro's 21-yard line. Three plays later, Dustin Eagleburger was in the end zone from a yard out. Chapman's first extra-point attempt missed the mark, but Hillsboro was called for running into the kicker. Chapman then ran the ball in for a 2-point conversion and a 21-13 lead. with 2:09 left in the quarter.

On Hillsboro's next possession, Chapman partially blocked a Funk punt and had the football on Hillsboro's 31-yard line. Three plays later, on the first play of the fourth quarter, Cory Dugan scored from 10 yards out . A missed PAT gave Chapman the 27-13 margin that held up until the final gun.

With the non-league loss, Hillsboro falls to 1-1 for the season while Chapman improves to 1-1.
