Young, Leihy attend FCCLA workshop

The Kansas Family, Career and Community Leaders of America organization hosted a training conference for novice members Aug. 28 and 29 at the Cross Wind Conference Center in Hesston.

Freshman representative April Young and advisor Monica Leihy attended the two-day workshop.

State officers and peer ed members taught the FCCLA members about leaders at work, dynamic leadership, FACTS and student body. Facilitator Rhett Laubach illustrated basic facts about FCCLA along with leadership skills and team building.

Centre FFA to host fishing derby Sept. 25

Centre FFA will hold its first youth fishing derby for kids age 6 to 12 on Sunday, Sept. 25, at the Father Padilla pond north of the swimming pool in Herington.

Check in is from 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Bring your own tackle and fishing poles.

Awards within the two age groups, 6- to 8- year olds and 9- to 12-year olds, will include most fish caught, biggest fish and smallest fish.

A $3 meal of hot dogs and side dishes will follow the derby.

Centre FFA holds alumni/chapter day

The annual Centre FFA alumni/chapter softball game was held Aug. 28 at the high school due to the rainy weather of the last week.

Members, parents and youth enjoyed playing wiffle ball, cards and dominoes, followed by a meal.

Chapter and alumni meetings followed the meal.

The alumni elected new officers for 2005-2006. Cary Granzow presented an overview of the chapter's activities this school year.

New alumni officers are Marcus Carlson, president; John Hajek, vice president; Julie Klenda, secretary; Francie Mueller, treasurer.

New chapter officers were introduced and members were made aware of upcoming events.

Sunflower Journeys to film Friesen Mill

The Friesen Mill is being refurbished for an upcoming television appearance.

The mill will be filmed in late September by Sunflower Journeys a program on KTWU, a public television station in Topeka.

The mill was replicated in 1994 by the late Tabor professor Richard Wall. The original Jacob Friesen Mill was built in 1876 in the Mennonite settlement village of Gnadenau.

Storytime sessions to start Sept. 21

Registration has begun for the fall session of preschool storytime at the Hillsboro Public Library, to start Sept. 21 and run until Christmas.

The 45-minute storytime is for children age 3 through kindergarten.

It is offered at 10:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. Wednesdays and at 10:15 a.m. Thursdays.

Children's librarian Delora Kaufman reads books, leads and activites, sings songs and creates crafts with the children.

Cost is $3 per child for the entire session and must be paid by the first class period. To register, call the library at 947-3827.

Pihl to speak at Farmerettes Sept. 12

Farmerettes will meet at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, at the home of Leona Koslowsky.

Nancy Pihl will speak on the love of chocolate.

Roll call will be an outstanding vacation memory.

Quilt guild to meet Sept. 12 at UMC

The Country Stitchers Quilt Guild will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, at the United Methodist Church in Hillsboro.

Members are asked at bring their challenge projects (and attached color crayons) to be judged. A game called "Who Wants to Be a Quilter?" will be held in lieu of a guest speaker.

Guests are welcome at a $2 charge for non-guild members.

New Friends to sell sausage at fair booth

Friends of the Hillsboro Museums will serve sausage-on-a-stick as its first fund raiser Sept. 17 at the Arts and Crafts Fair.

The new organization is following in the steps of the Hillsboro Historical Society, which conducted previous museum fund raisers.

Sausage-on-a-stick will be sold for $2 or with zwieback for $2.50. The Friends booth will be located at the southwest corner of Main and First streets.

The purpose of the Friends is to support and promote the educational programs of the Hillsboro Museums.

Initial membership dues will be $5 per year. Memberships can be purchased at the Friends booth at the fair.

GHS booster club to host tailgate Sept. 9

The Goessel Booster Club is sponsoring a tailgate party from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 9 just prior to their first home high-school football game.

The public is invited to attend.

Open house Sept. 10 for Knak's 92nd

Pete Knak will celebrate his 92nd birthday with an open house from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Hillsboro Long-Term Care Unit, 701 S. Main.

No gifts are requested, but cards are welcomed.
