Hillsboro overcomes first-games mistakes to post a season opening victory at Reimer Field
The Hillsboro Trojans overcame a lot of opening game mistakes with a late scoring surge that carried them to a 27-2 win over Lyons at Reimer Field Friday night.
A bounty of bad snaps, fumbles and penalties stymied both teams in the first half until Trojan quarterback Josh Boese connected with Troy Frick for a seven-yard score with 1:55 left in the half. David Funk kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
Nobody scored again until the Trojans gave Lyons their only points of the night when a wild long-snap sailed over Funk's head as he prepared to punt near the goal line, resulting in a 2-point safety with 4:01 left in the third quarter.
Tim Funk broke the game open in the fourth quarter when he broke a 42-yard scoring run up the middle for a 13-2 Hillsboro lead. The Trojans failed to execute the extra point attempt.
Hillsboro scored twice more in the game, first on a 1-yard run by Boese with 8:15 to go, and then on a 14-yard pass from Boese to Adam Scheele with 3:01 to play.
Hillsboro's defense dominated Lyons all night long. The Lions' best scoring threat came late in the game, when they drove the length of the field only to run out of time at the end.
With the win, Hillsboro begins the new season with a 1-0 mark. The Trojans will travel to Chapman next week.
