'Tis the season to cheer on a team The start of a new season for the high school sports teams is a time of anticipation. Everyone is undefeated and the promise of great things to come is just around the corner.

We are extremely proud of our team at the Free Press for going all out in creating our seventh special edition of "Extra Point!" which covers fall sports for Tabor College and the six high schools in our distribution area.

--

As one of my coaches used to say, "The other team puts their pants on one leg at a time just like we do." I guess that meant we had nothing to fear from our opponents.

In response to that I tried to put both legs in my pants at the same time. I fell down a few times at first, but with practice was able to do it. It would be a dangerous thing physically for me to try now, but mentally I could still do it.

--

At first I thought I might be dreaming when I heard someone on the roof of our apartment early Sunday morning. It was too early for Santa Claus.

I had always heard of kids climbing on the roofs downtown and running around so maybe that is what was going on.

It is kind of a thoughtless thing to do because it can damage the roofs, which are hard enough to keep from leaking as it is. It was a little unnerving, too, as I didn't expect to hear footsteps overhead at 3 o'clock in the morning.

--

Next time you put bread in the toaster you might pay attention to whether you put it in right side up or just throw it in any which way.

I found myself straightening a piece to right side up when it fell in crooked. What does the bread or the toaster care? It will toast any way it goes in.

--

Another thing about order, like the example above, is most people eat pie with the point facing them. Why is that?

--

I heard of one person who eats chocolate cake in two steps. He eats the cake part first and takes it up a notch by eating the frosting second.

--

With many annual festivals and events just around the corner in Marion County, it wouldn't hurt to take a look around your property to see if there are weeds or debris that need removing. We get just one chance to make a first impression.

--

If the price of gasoline stays high for a long period of time, our rural communities will have to work even harder to provide jobs that are close to home. Now is the time to take your bright ideas and put them into action.
