Gates appointed

Goessel postmaster

Effective May 14, Teresa M. Gates has been appointed Goessel postmaster, as announced by Shirley Crane, manager of post office operations for the U.S. Postal Service.

Installation ceremonies are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, at the Goessel Post Office. Crane will administer the oath of office.

Gates succeeds Sheryl Molzen, who retired March 31 as postmaster. Anita Goertzen, who served as officer-in-charge in the interim, has returned to her position as Goessel postmaster relief.

Gates began her career in 1988 as a city carrier in Salina and was promoted to Smolan postmaster in 1990. She also served as postmaster in Ramona before becoming Walton postmaster in 1998.

Medicare meetings set for Aug. 5, 25

Presentations on Medicare prescription drugs will be given by Social Security representatives at two meetings, first at 2 p.m. Aug. 5 at Park Village Lower-Level Commons Area, and second at 1 p.m. Aug. 25, at Marion Senior Center.

The public is invited to attend to learn more about Medicare Part D.

Santa Fe symposium set for Sept. 29-Oct. 2

Registration materials are available for the 2005 National Santa Fe Trail Symposium, set for Sept. 29 through Oct. 2 in McPherson.

Hosted by the Santa Fe Trail Association every two years, the event includes national speakers, tours of historic sites, educational workshops, special exhibits and evening entertainment.

This year's conference returns to Kansas to highlight the portion of the historic trail that runs through Marion, McPherson, Rice and Barton counties.

Area residents may sign up to attend the entire conference, one day or any individual speaker, tour or evening event.

More information may be obtained online at www. mcphersonks.org. Materials may be requested ay calling 620-257-3941 or emailing sftasymposium@ yahoo.com.

Registration packets are also available at the Coronado-Quivira Museum in Lyons, the McPherson County Old Mill Museum in Lindsborg and the McPherson Chamber of Commerce.

Early registration discount is available through Aug. 15. Final registration deadline in Sept. 19.

Area schools exhibit in Goessel Aug. 1

Beginning Aug. 1 through the end of the year, the Mennonite Heritage Museum in Goessel will host the exhibit "Yesterday's Schools: Our Lasting Legacy."

The exhibit's goal is the document the history of the Goessel-area one-room schools with photos, artifacts and interviews.

Included in the exhibit are pictures of school buildings, teachers with their pupils at play and in the classroom, examples of classwork, interesting facts about each school and an index of more than 600 teachers.

Sixteen Goessel-area schools are included in the exhibit: Antioch, Emmenthal, Good Hope, Gordon, Greenfield, Green Valley, Heimbaugh, Hochfeld, Pleasant Valley, Sand Creek, Springfield and Steinbach in Marion County; and Emma Valley, S. Maple Grove, North Bloomfield (Pleasant Valley) and South Bloomfield in McPherson County.

"This exhibit is an ongoing project," said researcher Mayleen Vinson. "I'd like to include photos from each decade and ideally would like a school group photo from each year of each school.

The Mennonite Heritage Museum, located at 200 N. Poplar, is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Hiebert, Continentals to perform Aug. 24

Melissa Hiebert of Hillsboro will perform with the Continental Singers Aug. 24 in Marshall, Mo., at a location to be announced.

The Continentals were formed in 1967 as a non-profit, interdenominational ministry that seeks to spread the gospel of Christ through high-quality programs that incorporate traditional, gospel, inspirational and contemporary musical styles.

The ministry has grown to include more than 20,000 people on more than 300 tours to all 50 states and 75 countries.

Hiebert, 16, will be a junior at Hillsboro High School.

Hillsboro band camp set for Aug. 8 to 10

Gregg Walker, director of Hillsboro school bands, will hold a band camp for all incoming band members, grades seven through 12, from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 8 to 10 in the band room.

Band members will meet at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 10 to prepare to march in the fair parade. Senior high and junior high bands will march separately.

The camp will consist of working on marching fundamentals and music. All students need to show up with their instruments as will as pop/marching music, lyre and flip folders, and wear comfortable shoes for marching practice.

Chat and Dine set for Aug. 7 at lake

Marion County Lake residents and guests will meet at 6:30 p.m. for their Aug. 7 Chat and Dine covered-dish dinner at the South Lake Hall.

Don Thomas will give the program of John Romulous Brinkley, the infamous Milford goat-gland promoter and pioneer of early radio media politics in Kansas.

Other agenda items will include recognition of new residents, birthdays and anniversaries for August. Tickets will be sold at the door for the monthly fund-raiser drawing.

Hosts for the meeting are Jean Maples, Don Thomas, Glenna and Jim Newkirk, and Judy and Bob Priest.

Agape center to host

German meal Aug. 6

A German meal will be served Aug. 6 during Threshing Days at the Agape Senior Center in Goessel.

The public is invited to come enjoy a traditional meal in air-conditioned comfort after the parade.

MAPP foster-parent classes by Youthville

Youthville is in need of foster parents, especially those able to care for an older child or a child with special needs.

The free training classes, called Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting, will be held on Mondays beginning Aug. 22 in Salina.

Individuals 21 or older, married or single, living in an apartment or house may enroll in the free training classes by calling Youthville at 1-800-593-1950, ext. 194.

Youthville provides specialized care to youth and families throughout Kansas following out-of-home placement of youth.

Youthville has more than 350 foster homes, making it one of the largest family foster-care providers in the state of Kansas and the state's leading contract agency agency for all foster-care services in Sedgwick County.

The agency also has two residential facilities, one in Newton and the other in Dodge City.

Veterans should see service rep in Marion

Richard Haywood, Veterans' Service Representative for the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs, will be in Marion from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2, and Tuesday, Aug. 16, at the Health Department.

Any veterans, their dependents or survivors who have received an Eligibility Verification Report form, or any inquiry from the Department of Veterans' Affairs, should contact him for assistance.

If possible, contact the Emporia office at 620-342-3347 prior to Haywood's visits so all files will be available. Scenic Roots to play in Peabody July 31

Scenic Roots, a bluegrass gospel group from Concordia, will be performing at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 31, at Santa Fe Park in Peabody.

The concert, hosted by First Baptist Church of Peabody, will feature Amber, Erin and Doug Rogers.

An ice cream social will follow the free concert. The public is invited to attend.

Gospel artists to sing in Marion July 30

Gospel music recording artists Phil and Pam Morgan of Kansas City, Mo., will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 30, at Marion Christian Church, 140 N. Elm.

The concert is part of their national "Gotta Keep Walkin'" tour, also the title of their new CD.

Children's book party Aug. 3 in Florence

The Florence Library has 69 new children's books available for checkout because of a children's book grant awarded by the Libri Foundation.

The foundation provides rural libraries with quality children's books by a two-to-one matching-grant process.

The matching share of this grant was made possible by the Flossie Jackson memorial funds.

The public is invited to view the new books at a celebration party to be held from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3.

Strotkamp exhibit at Prairie Arts in Burns

An exhibit of artwork by Dorthea Strotkamp is on display at Prairie Arts in Burns through the part of August.

Strotkamp was a primarily self-taught artist in Burns who worked in a variety of media throughout her life.

The exhibit of her work includes paintings, sculptures, porcelain and ceramics.
