The Marion/Morris County chapter of Thrivent Financial Services for Lutherans will be sponsoring a benefit hamburger fry Sunday, June 12, for Rita Brunner, who is undergoing cancer treatments.
The event will run from noon
to 2 p.m. at the Tampa Senior Center. Drawings for prizes are planned. Donations will be accepted.
Supplemental funds will be provided by Thrivent Financial Services for Lutherans.
Veterans' rep to be
in Marion June 21
Richard Haywood, veteran's service representative for the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs, is scheduled to be in Marion from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 21 at the health department.
Any veterans, their dependents or survivors who have received an Eligibility Verification Report form, or any inquiry from the Department of Veterans' Affairs, should contact Haywood for assistance.

Quilt Guild field trip
to Hutchinson July 11
Instead of its regular June meeting, the Country Stitchers Quilt Guild will take a field trip July 11 to Cottonwood Quilts in Hutchinson.
Members will meet at Hillsboro United Methodist Church and leave at 9 a.m.
Hamm family meets for reunion June 5
The Ed and Bertha (Hill) Hamm family held their 21st annual reunion June 5 at the Marion County Lake Hall.
The covered-dish dinner was hosted by Clayton and Wanda Hamm and Larry and Ruth Hamm.

Burns churches to host VBS June 13-17
Burns United Methodist Church invites area children age 4 through seventh grade to participate in its summer Vacation Bible School June 13 to 17. The theme will be "Jungle Adventure: Discovering God's Love."
The program will be held from 6:25 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. each evening, with a final presentation for family and friends at 8 p.m. June 17.
First Mennonite Church of Burns will co-host the event.

CROP Canvass Kickoff
All Marion County churches are invited to participate in the annual Marion County CROP Canvass Kickoff, to be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, at First Mennonite Church in Hillsboro.
Church representatives will receive envelopes for church attendees to contribute money or grain to help stop hunger.

Goessel 7th-graders honored for ACTs
Sierra Duerksen and Jessica Goertzen of Goessel were recognized June 5 at the University of Kansas for their performance on the ACT test this winter.
Both were invited to take the test as seventh-graders because of their participation in the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP).
Out of 2,070 seventh-grade students in Kansas who took the test, 893 qualified for state recognition by earning scores of at least 20 on one of the four areas of the test.
Sierra is the daughter of Ron and Patsy Duerksen. Jessica is the daughter of Kevin and Denise Goertzen.
AGAPE potluck meal
to feature Schmidt
A potluck supper will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at the AGAPE Senior Center in Goessel.
The supper will feature Josh Schmidt of Goessel, who has just finished his "Mow for Victory Tour" across America on a lawn mower.
County appraiser's reinspection begins
The Marion County appraiser's office has started its reinspection process for 2005.
The following townships and cities will have a data collector visiting every property, measuring all structures and talking to the occupant if possible. If an interview is not possible, a yellow data card will be left for the owner. The card needs to be filled out and returned to the appraiser's office.
Data collectors will have county badges, and vehicles will be clearly marked for identification.
Areas to be covered are Catlin, Centre South, Durham Park, Grant, Lehigh Twp. and City of Lehigh, Lost Springs Township, Moore and Carriage Hills subdivision in Hillsboro.

Creamer graduates from Salina Tech
Haley Creamer, daughter of Laurie and Don Creamer of Marion, graduated May 15 from Salina Area Technical School's dental assistant program.
Creamer was a 2004 graduate of Marion High School.
Sara Hamm wins
Incentive Award
The Alpha Omega chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International announces that Sara Hamm of Tampa has been awarded their 2005 Incentive Award.
Incentive Awards are available to female secondary school or college students who are majoring or planning to major in education at an accredited Kansas college or university.
Hamm is a 2005 graduate of Hillsboro High School and is the daughter of James and Myrna Hamm of Tampa. She plans to attend Washburn University, majoring in elementary education and minoring in business.

"Joust Read" to start at Hillsboro library
Hillsboro Public Library's summer reading program for middle school and high school students will start at 2 p.m. June 10.
Participants in the "Joust Read" program will set summer reading goals, join in Medieval-themed crafts and games, and earn points for their participation. The competitors with the most points on July 29 will win prizes.
Registration costs $1 and the group will meet at least twice after registration.
20 attend reunion of
HHS Class of 1940
Members of the Hillsboro High School Class of 1940 were determined to have a 65th reunion May 28 for those able to come.
Mildred Karnowski offered her home at 402 S. Main, and Elvina Ediger volunteered to prepare the noon lunch.

The members shared about their experiences and read letters from those unable to attend. Mildred Granada Karnowski had a memorial for the 20 class members who had passed away. Esther Klassen Schroeder provided instrumental music.
Lincolnville youth
to attend Girls State
Jackie Klenda of Lincolnville has been chosen by the Tampa American Legion Auxillary to attend Sunflower Girls State at the University of Kansas this summer.
About 460 high-school juniors will attend the program, which teaches young women about the political system of the Kansas government.
Klenda is the daughter of Val and Jule Klenda.
Youth to raise funds for mission trip
The Hillsboro United Methodist Youth Fellowship will host a spaghetti feed and work auction June 12 at the United Methodist church.
The meal starts at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the auction. The youth encourage individuals who need someone to do yardwork or housework to come and bid.
The event is a fundraiser for the UMYF mission trip to DOOR in Chicago.
Farmerettes to tour Burns June 13
Farmerettes will meet at 9: 15 a.m. Monday, June 13, at the First Mennonite Church parking lot to carpool to Burns.
They will tour several places in Burns.
Penner wins drawing
from Folk Festival
Deborah Penner of Hillsboro was the winner of a drawing held by the Hillsboro Museums.
The "Tour to Win" contest was held during the Hillsboro Museums' Folk Festival. To be eligible, contestants had to have their visits validated at each of the museums' major attractions: the Friesen Windmill, the William F. Schaeffler House, the Kreutziger School and the Peter Paul Loewen House.
The prize, a Sunday buffet for four, was donated by Linden Thiessen of the Olde Towne Restaurant in Hillsboro.

give piano recital
Parkview Mennonite Church hosted a piano recital May 23, featuring 18 students of Beverly Richards performing solos and duets.

50 at Chat and Dine; next set for July 2
Fifty Marion County Lake residents and guests participated in the monthly Chat and Dine covered-dish dinner and entertainment June 4 at the south Lake Hall.
Guests attending were Kay Navrat, guest of Nadine and Delmar Iseli; and Victoria, Kathy and Rick Edwards, guests of Joyce and Richard Kellison.
Joyce Kellison and Victoria and Kathy Edwards provided a musical program, and Grace Yoder shared selections of humorous prose and jokes.
Recognized for June and July birthdays were Nadine Iseli, Preston Huston, Joyce Kellison, Sue Peterson, Alberta Pritz, Caroline White and John Yoder. Those celebrating June and July wedding anniversaries included Mary Alice and Don Jolley, Gloria and Bob Moody, Sue and Willis Peterson, Marg and Jerry Richardson and Cara and Jerald Stockdale.
Helen Beckham reported on contributions to landscaping around the CCC commemorative statue, with special recognition to Wayne Reno, and provided an update on installation of the path and other plans. Reno urged for a public recognition of the work the Beckhams had contributed toward the statue project.
Dwight Beckham provided a rough draft of the lake directory. He requested that individuals proofread the draft and make required changes.
Treasurer Nadine Iseli reported that the coordinating committee had transferred funds from the checking account into a one-year and two-year certificate of deposit. She said donations for raffles in April, May and June had compensated for deficits in the hall rental budget to date. Winner of the June raffle of a twig planter filled with bedding plants was Kay Navrat.
The July 2 meeting of Chat and Dine will be a cookout at 6:30 p.m. at the East Shelter House. Burgers and brats will be furnished. Families attending should bring a salad or dessert, as well as lawn chairs.
Hosting the cookout will be Nadine and Delmar Iseli, Rachel and Marion Toland, Sharon Williams and Creighton Smith.
