Dedication of the Alexanderfeld Village Historical Marker is set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at the Alexanderfeld Church of God in Christ Mennonite Church, 1806 Holly, west of Hillsboro.
The marker commemorates the settling of Mennonite pioneer families at this site between 1874 and 1877 from Molotschna Colony in South Russia, Ukraine. The families were part of the larger migration to America in search of religious freedom and economic opportunities.
The first eight families along this mile road were: Heinrich and Aganetha Fast, Abraham and Anna Harms, Abraham and Helena Hiebert, Johann and Mary Hiebert, Peter and Adelgunda Jost, Abraham and Helena Klaassen, Heinrich and Susanna Penner and Gerhard and Justina Peters.
Parkview to host benefit dinner June 3
A grilled smoked pork chop benefit dinner is planned for 5 p.m. Friday, June 3, at the Parkview Church Activity Center, 610 S. Main, east entrance.
A donation will be taken for the Dale Winter Medical Fund.
King's Daughters to dine May 24
King's Daughters of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Marion will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, for their Friendship Salad Supper.

Emmanuel pastor honored at dinner
More than 100 guests and members of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Marion honored Paster Bill and Leilani at a dinner May 15 following the morning service.
Several gifts of appreciation were presented to the couple for their 12 years of service at the church.
Canton DJ to host eighth-grade dance
Local disc jockey Todd Vogts of Lucky Se7en Mobile DJ Services will host a dance Friday, May 20, for the eighth-grade graduates of Canton-Galva Middle School.
The event will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the basement of the State Bank of Canton, 103 S. Main. All eighth-graders are invited to attend with a date.
Eight parent chaperones will be in attendance in addition to a crew of disc jockeys from Lucky Se7en Mobile DJ services.
Vogts, a lifetime resident of Canton and graduate of Canton-Galva High School, said he wants to ensure that the eighth graders are not overshadowed by high-school graduation.
"My goal is to provide a special night of safe fun that will put the spotlight on the eighth-grade graduates," Vogts said. "I just feel they deserve it."
A sign-up sheet for students to volunteer to bring snacks is posted in the school building in Galva.
The eighth-grade graduation will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, in the CGMS gymnasium in Galva.
County Lake crew patrols Upland Road
A Marion County Lake crew of 12 patrolled the ditches on Upland Road May 9, bringing in 25 bags of trash and a one-and-a-half-ton truckload of previously cut evergreens and cottonwood trees.
Trash treasures included a substantial number of Bic lighters, aluminum beer, soft drink and Slim Fast cans, a conversation piece import from Canada and a vehicle ignition key. The key's owner was located through a Dillon's identification tag.
Lake residents participating in this yearly Chat-and-Dine activity were Tom Anderson, Helen and Dwight Beckham, Dean Fincham, Marilyn Hamler, Gilbert Mayes, Judy and Bob Priest, Jerry Richardson, Sharon Williams and Grace and John Yoder. Marty Toland met the group with coffee for a break at the half-way point.
Tour to visit three barns near Goessel
A barn tour featuring three country barns plus the museum's Schroeder Barn has been scheduled by the Mennonite Heritage Museum in Goessel from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m, Sunday, June 5.
A map to find the barns will be available at the museum at 200 N. Poplar. A $5 admission will be charged for the barn tour and a showing of favorite quilts owned by museum board members on display in the Immigrant House.
All three barns have a unique story. One of them is in the process of applying for listing on the Register of Historic Kansas Places and nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
Also happening at the same time will be a free flower and garden show in the Preparatory School on the museum grounds, sponsored by the Town and Country Garden Club.
