Entries invited for

Goessel garden show

The Town & Country Garden Club invites all gardeners to start planning their entries for Goessel's Flower & Garden Show to be held June 4-5.

The event will be held at the prep-school building at the Mennonite Heritage Museum in Goessel.

Gardeners of all ages, especially children, are invited to bring entries.

Classification sheets are available at the Keith's Foods in Goessel (previously Mid-Kansas Co-op). Those who call 620-367-2513 and leave a name and address will be mailed a sheet.

Folk Fest truck rally

planned for May 28

Hillsboro Folk Fest will host a nitro-powered RC truck rally at 1 p.m. May 28 at Hillsboro Memorial Ball Field.

Drivers should arrive between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. All nitro off-road vehicles are welcome.

Those needing to sell used equipment should bring it to the rally.

Hillsboro Fine Arts Festival May 12

Hillsboro middle and high schools will be offering their annual fine arts festival Thursday, May 12.

The evening includes performances by choral and instrumental groups from the two schools as well as displays by art students.

Musical performances will be in the auditorium. The HMS band and choir will perform at 6:30 p.m. followed by the HHS band at 7:30 p.m. and the choir at 8:15 p.m.

Exhibits by art students will be in the commons and the art room.

Goessel barbecue and concert May 17

The Goessel High School Music Department is planning its community barbecue and concert for Tuesday, May 17, at the high school lunchroom and auditorium.

The barbecue starts serving at 5:30 p.m. and the concert will begin at 6:45 p.m. There is no charge for the event, but donations will go toward the travel fund of the band and choir. All of the items needed for the dinner are donated by various businesses and community people.

The menu for the dinner will be pork burgers, baked beans, chips and cookies.

The concert will showcase the highly regarded GHS band and choir, which will perform their 2005 State Festival presentations.

The grade-7-through-12 choir will perform as well as the fifth- and sixth-grade band, the junior high band and choir, high school men's chorus, women's chorus and Elbiata Singers. Kreider to repeat

WWII presentation

Historian Robert Kreider will repeat the program "Hope Amidst Devastation: Images from the End of World War II" at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Kauffman Museum in North Newton.

Admission to the program is free and open to the public.

Kreider was the first Mennonite Central Committee volunteer assigned as a relief worker in Germany after World War II. His audio/visual program, first given Feb. 27, is associated with the special exhibition "The Art of Sharing, The Sharing of Art: Responses to Mennonite Relief in Postwar Germany," on display at the museum through May 29.

The museum is located at the corner of 27th and Main streets.

Ramona HS reunion planned for May 29

The triennial reunion of Ramona High School alums is planned for 5 p.m., Sunday, May 29, at the Centre Elementary School Gym in Lost Springs.

"School Daze" is the theme of the evening, replicating a typical day of school 50 years ago with English, public speaking, glee club and a spelling bee. Several of the graduates' children will be impersonating teachers of another era.

School will be called to order at 5:30 p.m. by alumni president Merv Deines of Ramona. Eugene Hicks, vice president from Herington, will tell stories from the past. Anna Mae Stika, secretary/treasurer from Tampa, and Millie Rowe, assistant secretary/treasurer from Herington, will be registering returning alumni.

Dinner will be catered by Maggie and Marvin Meisinger of Marion, former owners of Butch's Diner in Tampa.

Delta Kappa Gamma society chapter meets

The Alpha Omega chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met at 9 a.m. Saturday in Canton, with 16 members and one guest present.

Helen Reznicek led in devotions and Jan Terman sang a solo.

Reports were given by those attending the state convention in Great Bend: President Pauline Holub, Mary Regier, Reznicek, Mary Olson, Rowena Olsen, Anita Boese, Mildred Karnowski and Ruth Hamm.

Reznicek will co-chair the convention next year, and Boese is a member of the growth and services committee. The Rose Award was given to the chapter for excellence in communication.

Teri Klenda was initiated as a new member of the society. She is on staff at Butler County Community College.

In honor of the 76th anniversary of the society, Olson presented a program on the founders of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Sara Hamm, a graduating senior at Hillsboro High School, was given the $500 Incentive Award. She plans to pursue a career in education.

The morning concluded with a luncheon.

Chat and Dine held May 7 at the lake

Marion County Lake residents met for the monthly Chat and Dine meeting Saturday at the South Lake Hall for a covered-dish dinner and program, "Songs to Remember," by Estelle McCarty of Marion.

Newest lake residents Sharon Williams and Creighton Smith were introduced. Williams has opened a beauty salon at their residence at 12 Highland.

Recognition for May birthdays was given to Sharon Williams, Bob Priest and Jerald Stockdale. Homer and Jean McKellips' 54th wedding anniversary this month was announced. Token gift bags were given for birthday and anniversary honorees.

Jean McKellips alerted the eligible voters to the candidacy of Judy Reno, lake resident, for a position on the St. Luke's Hospital Board.

Helen Beckham announced that Upland Road cleanup would begin around 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 10. The rain date would be May 12.

Winner of the rent supplement raffle was Dwight Beckham. The coordinating committee has established this method to help collect sufficient funds each month to pay the $50 rental fee for the Lake Hall.

The June 4 meeting of Chat and Dine will be hosted by John and Grace Yoder, Bob and Gloria Moody and Joyce and Richard Kellison.

Veterans' rep to be

in Marion May 17

Richard Haywood, veteran's service representative for the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs, is scheduled to be in Marion from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 at the health department.

Any veterans, their dependents or survivors who have received an Eligibility Verification Report form, or any inquiry from the Department of Veterans' Affairs, should contact Haywood for assistance.

If possible, contact the Emporia office at 620-342-3347 prior to May 17 so all files will be available.

Birthday reception for Loewen's 80th

A come-and-go reception to celebrate Alice Loewen's 80th birthday will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at Parkview Church Fellowship Hall.

Those unable to attend may send greetings to her home at 211 S. Kennedy, Hillsboro.

Awards, installation at FCCLA luncheon

Hillsboro FCCLA hosted its annual awards luncheon and installation of officers April 28 in the FACS room at Hillsboro High School.

The newly elected officers for the 2005-06 school year are Whitney Allen, president; Stephanie Abbott, vice president of membership; Becky Stecketee, vice president of public relations; Jayme Claassen, secretary; and Joshua Elliott, treasurer.

Dale Honeck presented the following awards: "Better You" to Abbott, Jessica Allen, Amelia Brown, Claassen, Elliott and Steketee; "Family Ties" to Abbott, Jessica Allen and Kayla Letterman; "Working on Working" to Elliott and Jessica Allen; "Speak Out for FCCLA" to Abbott, Jessica Allen and Whitney Allen; and "Take the Lead" to Jessica Allen.

Whitney Allen was recognized as Outstanding FCCLA Member.

The luncheon consisted of Pizza Hut pizza, soda and ice cream sundaes.

Marion Cty Special Ed Coop Board to meet

The Marion County Special Education Cooperative Board of Directors will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 16 in the Marion County Special Education Cooperative Conference Room, 302 West Eighth, Florence.

Vicky's School to give dance recital May 14

Vicky's School of Dance will present its 22nd annual dance recital, "Hollywood Nights and Broadway Dreams," at 7 p.m. May 14 and at 3 p.m. May 15 at the Hillsboro High School Auditorium.

The recital involves more than 125 area-wide students ages 3 to 18 performing ballet, tap, jazz, pointe and Irish dance.

The recital is free and open to the public.
