Despite a budget cutback that will result in the elimination of the Tabor College golf program after this spring, Bluejay golfers managed to qualify for the regional tournament May 1-2.
The men's team and Diane Soldan qualified to compete at the regional level this past weekend at the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament.
Playing the Stagg Hill Golf Course at Manhattan, the Bluejay men finished third, just one stroke ahead of fourth-place Southwestern College.
Brian Wadsworth finished the three-day tournament with scores of 74, 73 and 76 for a seven-over-par 223, good for third.
Finishing in a tie for sixth was Mike Jamieson who posted scores of 73, 82 and 76 for a 15-over par 231.
Nick Anneler placed 14th with scores of 77, 81 and 78 for an 18-over-par 236.
As a team, the Bluejays posted scores of 310, 319 and 317 for a total of 946.
The Bluejays will compete against 11 other teams, including fellow KCAC schools Bethany and Kansas Wesleyan.
"This is a big accomplishment to be recognized as one of the top teams in this area," said Dan Harris, Tabor coach.
Teams from Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas will comprise the regional field at Indian Creek Golf Course at Elkhorn, Neb., near Omaha.
The winning team will advance to the national tournaments. Men will play at the Prairie Highlands Golf Course in Olathe and women at the Blackthorne Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.
"We have some outstanding players and, hopefully, some of them will get hot and possibly qualify for nationals as individuals," Harrison said.
The Tabor coach said his athlete's performances at the KCAC tournament were all the more significant in the light of the program's impending conclusion.
"This spring was very disturbing once they found out the program was going to be discontinued, but they banded together," he said said.
"We even had a walk-on, Will Enger, step up to help and they raised their level of play to the point that as a team, they're able to go to the playoffs, which is a really big deal for these kids."
Baker Spring Invitational-Diane Soldan represented Tabor College at Baldwin City April 20-21 and came home with an individual championship.
Soldan easily outdistanced the field, shooting a 77 and an 82 for a two-day total of 159-six shots better than her nearest competitor.
Tabor's Cara Goedecke shot a 196.
Dutch Country Club Tournament-Tabor golf teams competed at Hesston April 14-15 with the men taking second place.
Mike Jamieson took individual honors with an opening-round 67 followed by a 74 for a two-day total of 141-four shots better than teammate Brian Wadsworth (70 and 75).
Diane Soldan claimed the individual title for the women with a 78 and 73 for a total of 151.
