Led by Amy Duerksen's state-record performance in the clean, Hillsboro High School's three-member girls' team placed third overall at the 2005 Class 3A Powerlifting Championships at Marion April 2.

Divided into weight classes, athletes compete in three events: squat, bench press and clean. In addition to competing for medals in each event, the amount of weight lifted in all three events is combined for a total outcome.

The Hillsboro girls finished with 22 points, which left them trailing Ellsworth with 36 and Beloit with 26. Athletes from 19 schools competed.

Duerksen finished second overall in the 165-pound weight class with a total weight of 510. The senior set a state record of 170 pounds in the clean, she lifted 200 pounds in the squat and bench pressed 140 pounds.

Emily Ratzlaff placed second in the 148-pound weight class with a total weight of 460. The senior lifted 185 in the squat, won the clean at 150 pounds and benched 125.

Katie Baltzer, also a senior, finished right behind Ratzlaff in the 148-pound class with a total weight of 445 pounds. She lifted 195 in the squat, won the bench press at 135 pounds and cleaned 115 pounds.

Four HHS boys lifted in a highly competitive field.

Chris Jensen had the best overall finish, placing fifth out of 17 in the 123-pound weight class with a total weight of 540 pounds. He lifted 215 pounds in the squat, benched 175 and cleaned 150.

Josh Jost placed 10th out of 51 in the 165-pound class with a total weight of 745. He lifted 300 in the squat, benched 220 and cleaned 225.

David Funk placed 17th in the 165-pound class with a total weight of 695. He lifted 280 pounds in the squat, benched 185 and cleaned 230.

Wade Weibert placed 10th out of 20 in the 242-pound class with a total weight of 830. He lifted 350 in the squat, benched 235 and cleaned 245.
