Hillsboro High School vocal music students participated in the state music festival Wednesday, April 13.
The men's chorus, women's chorus and concert choir brought home first-division plaques for their "I" ratings from the adjudicators.
Pascha services
at Orthodox church
The public is invited to attend Pascha (Easter) services the week leading up to Sunday, May 1, at Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church, 116 N. Washington.
Holy Week services begin with divine liturgy for Lazarus at 9 a.m Saturday, April 23, followed by divine liturgy with a palm procession at 10 a.m. Palm Sunday.
Services will be held at 7 p.m. each day the remainder of the week, with special services at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.
Pascha service then begins at 10 p.m. Saturday, with resurrectional procession at midnight. The bells will ring out the good news of the resurrection. Following the service will be a feast for all in attendance.

to sing at Ebenfeld
The John Warkentin family will give a concert at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, at Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church, 1498 Kanza Road, as part of the Christian Endeavor Program.
The public is invited to come an enjoy an evening of singing.
Jackson's paintings on display in Burns
Former Burns resident Minnie Jackson is holding a special showing of her paintings during April at Prairie Arts in Burns.
Jackson and her husband, Chuck, are former residents of Burns, where she taught art classes. She was won various awards for her work in Federated Women Club competitions and state fair, county and El Dorado Art Association shows.
Jackson is a former student of Mike Williamson, Eldon Key, Jan Mater and Hugh Wilkinshaw.
Working in watercolor, pastels, oils, charcoal and acrylics, she did most of her work from 1964 to 1994. She has also worked with making porcelain dolls, quilting and gardening.
Jackson's prize-winning "Iris Painting" is one of the features this month at Prairie Arts, open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Pure Fire concert at fairgrounds April 30
A concert featuring acclaimed singer and youth speaker Gabriel Peter, hosted by Pure Fire Teen Rally, is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at the Hillsboro fairgrounds.
The award-winning radio disc jockey and performer has opened in concert for such artists as Michael W. Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman and Point of Grace.
Special guest Dear Vanity of McPherson will also perform.

Centre FFA competes in Hutch, Great Bend
Centre FFA members competed April 5 in the South Central District Livestock Judging Contest in Hutchinson and April 11 at the South Central District and Barton County Community College Invitational Ag Sales and Farm Management CDEs in Great Bend.
On April 5, the Hutchinson Community College Block and Bridle hosted the district CDE and its own invitational contest. Jackie Klenda placed first in the district contest and fifth in the invitational. The senior team finished seventh in the district with team members Gloria Belton, Brandy Kaiser, Jackie Klenda and Alfonse Klenda.
One freshman team finished fifth in the district and invitational with team members Andy Carlson, Nellie Hill, Kristine Jirak (ninth individually in district and seventh in the invitational) and Julie Rziha. The other freshman team consisted of Ethan Forsberg, Jon Gehrke, Heath Shields and Randi Smith.
In district and invitational competition April 11, the farm management team finished second with team members Andrew Hajek (first), Trent Hajek (sixth), Tim Baker and Dana Beltz.
The ag sales and service team finished third in the district with team members Shaina Makovec (second in both competitions), Nathan Brunner (eighth), Jeremy Kristek (10th) and Beltz.
Dinner to promote cancer detection
A dinner program to inform women about early breast cancer detection, featuring speakers Kathleen Craig and Lynette Blomberg, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at the Hillsboro City Building, east room.

Burns UMC to hold graduation supper
The Burns United Methodist women invite the public to a covered-dish supper to celebrate the graduating seniors of the class of 2005.

Three Sisters to hold Victorian event
Three Sisters Victorian Tea and Treasures of Canton will host its first Victorian Spring Fling from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 23.
This all-day event will include a Victorian Fashion Show of more than 25 reproduced gowns and accessories, a program on Victorian rituals, four locations with displays of vintage and Victorian items, demonstrations, a walking tour and afternoon tea and lunch.

Tabor blood drive set for April 22
An American Red Cross blood drive is planned for 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 22, in the Tabor College Student Center Gym.
Walk-in donors are welcome, and snacks will be provided.
The blood drive is sponsored by the Tabor College Science Club.
Boudreaux inducted into honor society
Jessica Boudreaux of Hillsboro was one of 26 students inducted April 2 into the Alpha Phi Alpha chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Butler County Community College.
Phi Theta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious honor society serving two-year colleges around the world. Students must rank in the top 20 percent of the class to be invited to membership at Phi Theta Kappa and must maintain high academic standing during their enrollment in the two-year college.
Full Circle to offer
a cappella concert
Full Circle will perform songs celebrating life experiences of women at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, in the Wohlgemuth Music Education Center on the Tabor College campus.
Full Circle, a vocal group of women from the Harvey County area, performs its songs a cappella.
The public is invited to attend the free concert.
'Our Global Village' at Food for Thought
Prairie View Food for Thought will feature Marilyn Hamilton in "Our Global Village" from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 3 at the Tabor College Wohlgemuth Music Education Center.
Hamilton will share a map for appreciating and encouraging the development of a community into a global village.
Fee of $15 includes the meal, which will be served during the first half-hour with the one-hour presentation following.

Parkside to break
ground Thursday
Parkside Homes Inc. will have a groundbreaking ceremony at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 21, to mark the construction of two "Park Homes" on its campus.
The ceremony will be held just south of the present nursing facility. In case of rain, it will be moved indoors to the main dining room.
The project will include the two Park Homes, the installation of a fire-sprinkler system into the congregate-living facility, and some renovation in the present nursing facility.
The congregate-living facility will be licensed as assisted living. The present nursing facility will be formed into distinct neighborhoods and the goal is to convert all rooms to private rooms.
TC student group
at Parkview April 24
Tabor College's new student-led ministry team i268 will perform during the 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. worship services at Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church on Sunday, April 24.
The church is located at 610 S. Main, Hillsboro.
The group's name is based on Isaiah 26:8.
The performance will include a mix of dramatic and musical components, plus personal testimony.
"The purpose of i268 is to serve churches by providing a high-quality experience of worship using both musical and dramatic arts" said Jeremy Mohn, director of church relations at Tabor and coordinator of i268.
"We also hope to give people a glimpse of the Tabor experience by getting to know some of our current students."
The group consists of Jillian Brown, Minneapolis, vocalist and creative artist; Sara Clark, Chapman, percussionist and drama director/writer; Laura Ediger, Enid, Okla., pianist and vocalist; Steve Lautt, Minot, S.D., guitarist and vocalist; Lucas Regier, Grant, Neb., bass guitarist; Benjamin Schmidt, Newton, electric guitarist; Trenton Voth, Halstead, percussionist and vocalist; and Keith Warkentin, Corn, Okla., sound technician.
Holler to give senior voice recital April 24
Jessica Holler, a senior music and biblical and religious studies major from Ingalls, will present her senior voice recital on Sunday, April 24, in the Tabor College Chapel-Auditorium at 7 p.m.
Holler will perform works by Mendelssohn, Schubert, Donizetti, Catalani, Fauré, Menotti, Moore and King.
"Most (pieces) are standard repertoire that is required," Holler said. "But I picked the spirituals for their refreshing sound and soul."
After graduation, Holler plans to eventually obtain her master's degree in music therapy. First, however, she would like to do missions work or attend seminary.
Holler is the student of Holly Swartzendruber, assistant professor of voice.
