Trojans, Warriors top field at Hillsboro Invitational PDF Print E-mail

There was no place like home for the Hillsboro High School golf team on Friday. The Trojans, competing in an 11-team field, won the four-man and six-man titles at the Hillsboro Invitational Golf Tournament.

Marion won the two-man title and placed third in six-man competition and fourth in four-man competition.

Leading the way for Hillsboro was freshman Justin Kent, who shot a 76 over 18 holes to claim a two-stroke victory for individual-medalist honors over Marion sophomore Travis Hett.

Hillsboro junior Andrew Bina placed third at 79 and senior Patrick Harrison placed fifth with an 80. Senior Derek Hamm placed 13th in the field of 67 golfers.

"Obviously, I am very pleased with the outcome," Trojan coach Scott O'Hare said. "To win both the four-man and six-man competitions was just outstanding. To have three of the top four golfers on the team finish in the top five was a great thing to see, and Derek was only one stroke out of a top-10 finish."

Hillsboro four-man team of Kent, Bina, Harrison and Hamm combined for a score of 321-32 strokes better than runner-up Chapman at 353. Hesston placed third at 369 and Marion's team of John Whitwell (89), Keith Jones (88), Jake Bredemeier (95) and Chase Carlson (98) was fourth at 370.

With the addition of Hillsboro's two-man team score of 178 from Lance Bartel (90) and Jordan Allen (88), the Trojan six-man score was 499-24 strokes better than Chapman's 523 and 34 strokes ahead of third-place Marion at 533.

The Warriors' winning two-man score of 163 from Hett (78) and Nick Carlson (85) was enough for a six-stroke victory over Bennington and was seven strokes better than third-place Chapman. Hillsboro's two-man team of Bartel and Allen placed seventh at 178.

Two other area teams were also in the field.

Goessel's two-man team of Nick Frey (88) and Nate Ensz (84) placed fourth with a score of 172 and the Bluebirds' four-man team of Alex Drake (103), Derek Brown (104), Evan Esau (113) and Jake Schrag (113) combined for a score of 433, good for ninth.

The combined six-man score of 605 placed the Bluebirds eighth.

Peabody-Burns, meanwhile, got its best showing from its two-man team of Brandon Crabtree (95) and Chad Litton (97), whose combined score of 182 was good for eighth place.

The Warriors' four-man team of Tyler Litton (91), Zach Dameron (105), Mike Gfeller (104) and Jeremy Berger (162) combined for a 462, which placed it 10th.

Peabody-Burns' six-man score of 644 also was 10th-best in the field.

O'Hare said playing on their home course helped the Trojans, but it didn't fully account for their accomplishments.

"Obviously, playing on our home course is an advantage, but I think this group of guys has a great shot at posting those type of numbers throughout the season," he said. "Certainly, time and experience will tell the story."

O'Hare said he was pleased but not surprised by Kent's performance in only his second high school tournament.

"Although you always want to see any of your golfers take top medalist honors, having Justin walk away as the tournament champion as a freshman was very nice," he said. "He really played a solid front nine with a 3-over-par 38.

"He started to stumble at the start of is back nine, taking a double bogie on the first hole and a bogie on the second hole to start 3 over par. But his golf experience showed when he bounced back and rattled off seven straight pars to finish 6-over for the tournament."

O'Hare said his three other top scorers played well, too.

"Andrew really played a solid tournament considering he shot 9-over on the day with five of those strokes over par coming on back-to-back holes on the front nine," O'Hare said. "He came back after those two rough holes and played the next nine holes even par with two birdies.

"It was nice to see Andrew mentally recover from mistakes he made on those two holes.

"Patrick put together a very steady round with two double bogies on the day to go along with 10 pars. He has the capability to shoot much lower as he improves his short game.

"Derek was striking the ball pretty well most of the day but struggled a little on the greens. He posted a pretty decent score considering the number of putts he had on the round."

Also competing for Hillsboro as a seventh player was another promising freshman, Dylan Porter, who finished 16th overall with an 87.

"Dylan was playing in his first varsity competition as a freshman, and he handled the tournament competition very well, posting the fifth-best score for the team," O'Hare said.

Hillsboro will travel to Wichita on Friday to compete at the Collegiate Invitational at Hidden Lakes golf course.

"We will playing in a pretty tough field at the Collegiate Invitational on a relative tough course," O'Hare said. "This will be a good indicator of what we can do on courses away from home. I am anxious to see how we play there."
