The Tabor College baseball team traveled to Lindsborg on Saturday to play the nationally ranked Bethany Swedes (28th) with a short-handed squad.

As might be expected, Tabor dropped both Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference games, 8-1 and 6-1.

"We actually pitched well in these game," Tabor coach John Sparks said. "But Bethany runs the bases well and that was a big difference in the games."

In the opener, Tabor's Andy Womack (6-5, 1.85 ERA) allowed just two hits in five innings. But Tabor still trailed, 3-1.

Tabor scored its lone run in the fourth inning when Chance Miles reached base on a Bethany error, moved to second on a Jeremy Ball walk and scored on another Bethany error.

But that's all the scoring Tabor managed as the Swede pitchers allowed just two hits-one each from Mitch Harris and Miles.

Bethany added five runs in the sixth inning on just two hits and two Bluejay errors for the final 8-1 margin.

"We just didn't manufacture anything offensively," Sparks said. "Bethany is a good, solid team that plays good defense and puts a lot of pressure on you with their running game."

In the second game, Scott Wolf (1-7, 5.58 ERA) started for Tabor and threw five strong innings, allowing just five hits and four earned runs.

But once again the Bluejay provided little support with only seven hits.

Tabor began well when Casey Cooper reached on an error and scored on a single by Jeremy Ball for 1-0 lead.

Bethany countered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, scored by a batter who struck out but reached base on a passed ball and came home on a double.

Bethany added single runs in the third and fourth innings without a base hit to go ahead 3-1.

Tabor collected two hits in both the sixth and seventh innings but failed to capitalize, while Bethany pushed five runs across in the sixth to seal the victory.

With the losses, Tabor dropped to 16-20 overall and 4-8 in conference play.

Tabor had seven hits, led by Ball who was 2-for-3 with a run batted in and Justin Wilczak who was also 2-for-3.

"We just didn't hit the ball well and didn't string together enough hits," Sparks said. "If we get the kind of starting pitching like we did this weekend, down the stretch, I'm sure our bats will come alive.

"Offensively, this weekend was kind of an anomaly," he added. "If we can continue to get great starting pitching, we have a chance to be successful down the stretch."

Kansas Wesleyan-Tabor swept a pair of games at home to Kansas Wesleyan last Tuesday by scores of 7-3 and 15-1.

Bluejays jumped on the Coyotes with four runs in the first. Nick Green led off with a double followed by a pair of KW errors.

A sacrifice by Chance Miles and a double by Tyson Bauerle made the score 4-0 after one inning.

Wesleyan answered with a single run in the third but Tabor responded with a pair of runs in the home half.

Casey Hillman reached on an error and Jeremy Ball singled. Both eventually scored on singles by Bauerle and Tanner Monhollon to make the score 6-1.

Tabor made it 7-1 in the fourth inning when Grant Brubacher led off with a walk and eventually scored.

Hillman (6-3, 1.99 ERA) gave up single runs in the sixth and seventh innings but managed to throw a complete game four-hitter, allowing just two earned runs and striking out three to register the win.

Tabor managed eight hits but left nine runners on base.

"Hillman did a great job in that game with the wind blowing out," coach John Sparks said. "It's a tough place to pitch when it's windy but we did a good job defensively and an outstanding job pitching."

In the second game, starter Andy Womack benefited from Tabor's offensive explosion.

After a scoreless first inning, the Bluejays erupted for seven second-inning runs, highlighted by a home run by Grant Brubacher.

After the Bluejays added a pair of scores in the third inning capped by a Brubacher double, Tabor scored six more runs in the fourth.

Key hits in the inning included a triple by Ball and a home run by Kevin Peterson.

Wesleyan averted the shutout in the top of the fifth, but Womack picked up the victory, allowing just six hits while striking out five.

"Womack did a good job," Sparks said. "He pitched really well."

Tabor racked up 16 hits in the win. Brubacher was 3-for-4 with five runs batted in and Peterson went 4-for-4 with five RBIs.

"We've been capable of that kind of offensive output all year," Sparks said. "When we put it all together it's kind of scary sometimes-but we haven't been very consistent doing that.

"I think Kansas Wesleyan was a little low on their (pitching) rotation and once we knocked out their first guys, it kind of thinned them out a little bit."

With its first conference doubleheader sweep of the season, Tabor improved to 4-6 in KCAC play and 16-18 overall.

Coming- Tabor hosts Sterling on Wednesday, Bethany on Thursday and travels to Wichita to battle Friends on Saturday.

"This is obviously a big week for us," Sparks said. "If we can put together a good week of baseball, we'll do ourselves a lot of good."
