Fishing enthusiasts will find more things free as Marion County Lake enters the spring and summer seasons this year under a new contract arrangement with the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks.
Other visitors to the lake will find fees and regulations much the same as they were last year.
Tootsie Snelling, who assists her husband, Dale, in his work as park manager, said people who want to fish at the lake will still need state licenses. But the state has agreed to reimburse the county for fishing fees it normally charges in order to encourage more fishing.
She said this means visitors won't need lake permits for fishing in or using the heated dock.
If they operate a fishing boat, they won't need a permit as long as the boat is operated at 5 mph with "no wash and no wake."
The only change the state requested is in lake fishing regulations that channel catfish must be at least 15 inches long to keep them, she said. The former minimum length was 12 inches.
Boaters who are at the lake for pleasure or water skiing still will need permits reflecting the horsepower of the motor.
Snelling said the fee up to 9.9 horsepower is $10, from 10 through 14 horsepower is $15, from 15 through 99 horsepower is $22, from 100 through 199 horsepower is $30, and over 200 horsepower is $40.
Snelling said the permit for all jet skis is $30.The fees for camping will remain the same at $6 a night for campsites without utilities and at $12 a night for campsites with electricity and water.
She said visitors at the lake should stop at the office to obtain copies of lake rules and regulations.
