The Tabor College softball team swept a pair of games from Haskell Indian Nations University on Saturday at the Hillsboro Sports Complex.
Playing in blustery March winds, Tabor won both games by a 4-3 score.
In the opener, Johannah Love raised her record to 2-1 by allowing just two earned runs in seven innings of work while striking out five.
"Jo did really well and pitched her spots well," coach Tina King said. "She was smart about where she pitched and having Jackie (Schnell) behind the plate is a real ally to our pitchers."
Haskell jumped on top 1-0 in the fourth inning and stretched the advantage to 3-0 in the top of the sixth.
But in the bottom of the sixth, Tabor's Sara Thiessen led off with a triple off the left field fence. She strolled home on a single off the bat of Andrea Mendell to cut the lead to 3-1.
After Mendell stole second base, Schnell ripped a single with one out to drive Mendell home.
Porsche Davis beat out an infield single to put runners on the corners, then promptly stole second to put the go-ahead run in scoring position.
April Funk followed by scorching a liner in the gap to drive home both Schnell and Davis. Although Funk was thrown out trying to stretch her hit into a triple, the Bluejays took the lead, 4-3.
"April's hit came at the right time," King said. "She's been struggling at the plate and that hit really helped her confidence and got our team ready to go."
Love shut Haskell down in the top of the seventh to give Tabor its second win of the season.
In the second game, Holly Lindsay hurled Tabor to a 4-3 win in eight innings.
"Holly has gotten a lot stronger since last year and can go longer than she was able to," King said. "She's also starting to be able to hit her spots like Jo does, so she's really turning into a good pitcher."
Tabor jumped on top in the fourth when Schnell reached on a fielding error, stole second base and scored on another fielding error on a ball hit by Davis.
Haskell tied the game in the fifth, courtesy of two Bluejay errors.
Tabor regained the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Erin Loewen singled, moved to third on consecutive wild pitches and scored on a Thiessen triple.
The Bluejays extended the lead to 3-1 in the sixth. Davis reached on an error with one out and took second on a wild pitch. After Funk walked, the Bluejays executed a double steal to put runners on second and third. Davis then scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Micca Petersen.
But Tabor was unable to hold the lead in the seventh, when Haskell hitters singled and walked in succession. Both scored two outs later on a two-run double to knot the game at 3.
"Haskell was able to come back because of some mental mistakes, like over throws," King said. "I'm concerned, but I'm also proud we came back to win."
Although Tabor didn't score in the seventh, the defense took the game to the eighth and the International Tie Breaker was once again employed.
After Haskell failed to score, Love was placed on second base and Tabor bluffed the bunt, distracting Haskell into a wild pitch to move her to third base.
With Schnell at the plate, Tabor once again bluffed the bunt on a drawn-in infield and Schnell drilled the game-winning hit down the left field line to drive Love home and secure the 4-3 win.
Lindsay picked up her first win of the season against three losses.
With the win, Tabor improved to 3-4 and will play in a tournament in Sterling on Friday and Saturday.
"I've seen a lot of improvement already this spring," King said. "Our defense is solid and secure and ready to go.
"Our offense will get better with more games and seeing live pitching," she added. "We've shown we can be effective on offense and once we get confidence in some of the girls that lack it at the plate, I think we'll be a pretty strong team."
