Bethany College
to premiere work
The Bethany College Symphonic Band will perform the world premiere of "Take My Hand" as part of the its concert March 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Presser Hall auditorium.
The work, composed by Dwight Beckham Sr., was written in memory of longtime Kansas music educator Stan Talbott .
When Talbott died in March 2003, his family designated memorials go to the Bethany College instrumental department. A student committee of the donations and decided that a commissioned number for the band would be a fitting tribute.
"This is one of the most important works I have ever composed," composer Beckham said. "I had heard of Mr. Talbott for over 40 years as he was quite well respected as a music educator throughout the state."
In the commissioned work, Beckham uses a contemporary setting of "Precious Lord, Take my Hand," a favorite hymn of the Talbott family, for the contrasting melodic section of the work.
"In addition to the hymn melody, this composition incorporates themes which reflect his military service, his dedication to his family and church, and his important role as a music educator," Beckham said.
The concert is part of the Messiah Festival of Music and Art, a week-long celebration of the sacred music, theater and art.
