Sometimes it just isn't your day Did we want to go to the state basketball tournament in Hutchinson this week? Sure. Do we think less of our teams because we're not? Emphatically no.

We were treated to great exhibitions of basketball skills and effort all year long. The boys were great right out of the gate and the girls got better all year.

There is nothing wrong with expecting to win. Skills learned in competition will serve our students well as they enter the work world. A good salesman expects to make a sale every time out but it doesn't always happen. As long as you never quit and are prepared good things will come your way.

--

I was impressed with the comebacks by both the Trojans and the Jayhawks in their games this past weekend even though they both fell short at the end by four points. That they came back from 17 points down in the second half to almost win their games speaks well of their character. Sometimes it just isn't your day.

They celebrated the 50th year of Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence last Wednesday night during the KU-K-State basketball game. I was thinking all week about how old that fieldhouse was until it hit me that it was practically brand-new when I first went to KU in 1965.

It was only 10 years old then and Brown Gymnasium is already more than 15 years old.

To keep in shape I purchased one of those large flexible exercise balls. What is good about them is that you have to balance yourself all the time while doing any type of exercise which makes you use all of your muscles to maintain balance without falling off.

That ball and two cans of pork and beans for weights and I'm all set with my home gymnasium.

We were out walking the other night after work and Nancy was going to stop at her store before coming home. She asked me to start grilling the salmon for supper and also said I should grill the chicken breast because she said she was going to make "something else" out of it.

When she said she was going to make something else out of it I immediately said, "You mean a pin cushion or door stop?"

I really got into watching the Global Flyer world-record breaking flight around the world last week. It was refreshing to see coverage about something other than BTK.

I think it appealed to me because Steve Fosset is my age and he was able to stay awake for nearly three days while cooped up in a seven-foot cockpit.

When we first started the paper we often stayed awake two days straight but never three.

--

Here is a little cooking tip. If you like salmon like we do and purchase a big hunk that is frozen and aren't able to eat the whole thing at one time, here is a little trick.

I tried to saw it with a serrated knife but got nowhere fast. Then Nancy said why don't you score it and break it? So I scored it, held it on the counter with the score right on the counter's edge, hit it sharply and it broke just like a piece of glass.
