The Hillsboro High School Band is offering a "Jazz Valentine Evening" as a fund-raiser at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 10, in the commons area.
The event is free but people interested in attending are asked to pick up tickets from the HHS office, band students or director Gregg Walker, so planners can know how many people to expect.
Donations will be accepted.
'Financial Aid Night' for CHS seniors
A seminar "Financial Aid Night" will be held for seniors and their parents at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in Room 3 at Centre High School.
The presenter will be Bruce Jost, director of financial aid at Tabor College.
The focus of the seminar will be the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Senior students have already received a FAFSA application. Applications will also be available at the meeting.
If a parent's federal tax return is not yet completed, parents may estimate using last year's information and re-file their FAFSA at a later date.
Jost will explain how to complete the FAFSA and answer individual questions concerning completion of the financial aid form. Also, any questions concerning federal aid for post secondary education can be asked.

Maxwell refuge
to hold soup benefit
Maxwell Wildlife Refuge will hold its Souper Saturday Benefit from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 12.
A menu of Buffalo chili and vegetable soup, relish plate and fruit cobbler will be served. Cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 12 and under.
Visitors will be able to view buffalo and possibly elk on tours held at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Tram tours are scheduled for Saturday mornings beginning at 10 a.m. year round.

Tax help available through Mid-Cap
Mid-Kansas Community Action Program is providing free tax help and free e-filing in Marion County
The Mid-Cap office, located at 104 N. Fifth in Marion, is an Internal Revenue Service volunteer income tax assistance site.
Mid-Cap will help people with basic tax returns, particularly people with disabilities, elderly taxpayers and individuals with low to moderate income-$35,000 a year or less.
Bring W-2 and 1099 forms, information for all other income, information for all deductions and credits, social security card, a picture ID and a copy of last year's tax return if possible.

Farmerettes to hear Pritchard at meeting
Juana Pritchard will be the guest speaker at the Feb. 14 meeting of the Hillsboro Farmerettes.
The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. at the home of Carol Flaming, 307 N. Birch. Members will be asked to name a snowy-day activity for roll call.
Florentine potluck
set for noon, Friday
The Florentine Senior Center in Florence will be hosting a potluck meal on Friday, beginning at noon.
Noreen Weems, director of the Marion County Department for the Elderly, will be present to talk about the Low Income Energy Assistance Program as well as homestead and food sales tax refunds.
The main program will b presented by Sue Klassen, Florence post master, who will speak on preventing identity theft.
The public is welcome to attend.
Valentine theme planned for program
The Feb. 13 Christian Endeavor program at the Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church will carry a Valentine's theme.
The public is invited to attend the program, which begins at 7 p.m. The church is located 2 miles east and 4 miles south of Hillsboro on Kanza Road.
Potluck dinner to host Florida guests
Tampa Community Association is sponsoring a potluck dinner for 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Tampa Community Center.
Residents of Tampa and the surrounding area are invited to come and meet the Jeff and Amber Fisher, special guests from Tampa, Fla.
Entertainment will be provided by the fifth and sixth grade students from Centre Elementary School.
Those who attend should bring their own table service. Drinks will be provided.

BB tourney set
for Special Olympics
The faculty and students of Tabor College in cooperation with Hillsboro Kiwanis will host a basketball tournament for Special Olympics Feb. 12.
Games will be played in the college's Gymnasium and Student Center. Tournament play will be begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at 1 p.m.
Sixteen teams will be participating representing four counties. Divisions are made up of teams with similar playing abilities.
This tournament provides the teams with the needed game experience before they compete at the Kansas Special Olympic State Tournament held at Hays in March.
Tabor College and the Kiwanis have sponsored this tournament for more than 20 years.
