The Hillsboro wrestling team qualified all nine of its tournament entries in the medal round and finished fourth in a tough field of 15 teams Saturday in Eureka.
Hillsboro, with 115 points, trailed only Louisburg with 138.5 points, Eureka with 126, and Burlington with 115.
"To put all nine guys in the medal round and have seven of the nine finish in the top five was a great performance," coach Scott O'Hare said.
"I was very pleased to finish fourth as a team, but at the same time it was very disappointing that we weren't able to get that third-place finish and bring home a team trophy."
Eric Cress turned in Hillsboro top performance by winning the 135-pound class. Cress pinned Reed Williams of West Elk and John Daerr of Garden Plain, then took a 9-4 decision from Lucas Hicks of Herington in the title match.
Matt Brown placed second at 152 pounds by pinning Brandon Grant of Caney Valley and taking a 7-2 decision from Kirk Tinden of Clearwater before being pinned by Tyson Utech of Herington in the title match.
"It was great to put two in the championship finals," O'Hare said. "Eric has been there before in other tournaments, and he wrestled a good, smart match to avenge a loss from earlier in the season.
"Matt Brown knocked of the No. 1 seed in the tournament in the semifinals match with an impressive victory. This was Matt's first time making it to a tournament finals as a Trojan wrestler."
Hillsboro's other top-three finisher was Ric Johnson at 125 pounds. He pinned Colt Stone of Louisburg in the opening round, was pinned by Jordan Steward of Fredonia in the semifinals, took an 11-4 decision from Michael Bagwell of Hugoton before pinning Keith Pressly of Burlington.
Also finish in the medal round for HHS were: Zach Magnuson (2-3), who placed sixth at 103 pounds; Frankie Martin (2-2), fifth at 112; Chris Jensen (3-2), fifth at 119; Andrew Bina (3-2), fifth at 145; Ben Schaefer (2-3), sixth at 160; and Kurtis Shaw (2-2), fifth at 275.
Marion placed 14th at Eureka as a team. Riley Ross placed sixth at 119 pounds, Casey Nelson third at 152 pounds, and Adam Depler sixth at 189.
No other Warrior results were available at press time.
Lincoln double dual-The Trojans lost both ends of a tough double-dual meet at Lincoln last Thursday.
Lyons won the first dual, 43-36. Hillsboro failed to record a single win on the mat. The Trojan points came from forfeit wins by Zach Magnuson, Frankie Martin, Ric Johnson, Sean Leihy, Ben Schaefer and Kurtis Shaw.
Losing on the mat were Grady Stultz by fall, Eric Cress by decision, Andrew Bina by decision, Matt Brown by fall, Daniel Roble by fall and CJ Shaw by fall.
In the second dual, the home team posted a 51-30 win over Hillsboro. Cress was the only Trojan to win on the mat when he pinned his opponent.
Winning by forfeit were Alex Jost, Martin, Johnson and Stultz.
Losing on the mat were Magnuson by fall, Leihy by injury default, Bina by decision, Brown by fall, Schaefer by fall, Roble by fall, CJ Shaw by fall and Kurtis Shaw by fall.
"I knew coming in that these would be two tough duals," coach Scott O'Hare said. "Lyons had a very solid team last year and they were pretty young. Lincoln...won the Halstead tournament last weekend, so I knew they'd be tough.
"We wrestled a little flat in both duals. I didn't feel like we were really focused, and we looked mentally and physically worn down. This type of thing can happen after coming off a strong performance like we had last weekend at Halstead."
HHS JV-The Trojans posted the following records at a junior varsity tournament at Stafford on Saturday: Alex Jost 0-3, Jacob Yoder 4-0, Daniel Roble 0-2, CJ Shaw 1-3, Darcy Unrau 1-3, Matt Brown 1-2, Grady Stultz 2-0, Zach Jost 1-2, Zach Luthi 2-2.
