Three Hillsboro wrestlers came home with medals and the team placed seventh at the Charles McMillen Wrestling Tournament at Herington on Saturday.
Andrew Bina was the team's top finisher, placing second at 145 pounds. Bina pinned Harry Hopkins of Wamego in his opening match, pinned Brennan Seitz of Wabaunsee at 3:52 in the second period, then was pinned by Dylan Jenne of Abilene in the championship round.
"Andrew had couple of impressive wins to make it to the championship finals," coach Scott O'Hare said. "He is wrestling very solid at this point of the season. He wasn't pleased with his performance in the finals match, but he is doing some good things technically. He just needs to work on being patient and persistent."
Ric Johnson, meanwhile, placed third at 125 pounds. He was pinned in his opening match by Madison King of Wamego, but came back to pin Chris Niehves of Chapman, outscore Kyle Maybee of Herington, 17-7, and then pin Mike Lesline of Wabaunsee to place third.
"Ric probably put together a couple of his best matches of his high school career in the consolation semifinals and consolation finals to finish third after an early loss," O'Hare said. "Hopefully, his technique and intensity will continue to improve as we move into the second half of the season.
Hillsboro's third medalist was Chris Jensen, who placed fourth at 119. He pinned Cory Myers of Onaga in the first round, then was pinned by Danny Davidson of Abilene, defeated Riley Ross of Marion, 7-1, then lost to Curtis Anderson of Flint Hills, 10-3.
"I was very pleased to see Chris make it into the medal round and place fourth in his first high school varsity meet," O'Hare said. "He is really showing signs of improvement and doing some good things. He wrestles with a lot of intensity. He is a competitor and his technique is catching up with his desire to win."
Also competing for Hillsboro were Frank Martin at 112 (0-2), Grady Stultz at 130 (0-2), Eric Cress at 135 (1-2), Ryan Kaiser at 140 (1-2), Matt Brown at 152 (1-2), Ben Schafer at 160 (0-2), Josh Kenny at 171 (0-2) and Kurtis Shaw at 275 (1-2).
"I was a little disappointed with some of our performances in close, tough matches where we came up on the losing end," O'Hare said. "We have to learn how to win those tight matches.
"This was probably one of the toughest tournaments we will go this year," he added. "Hopefully, we can learn from our mistakes, correct them and win those matches here down the stretch, when they really count."
Marion also competed at Herington, but team results were not made available by press time.
Coming-The Trojans and Warriors will compete at the large Halstead invitational tournament on Friday and Saturday. Matches begin at 4 p.m. on Friday and resume at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
