Rain has a way of putting a damper on spring sports, and the weather showed it can be the toughest opponent on the schedule any day of the week.

Softball—The Tabor College women’s softball team ran afoul of bad weather twice this week.

“We got rained out in three games this week,” head coach Steve Berg said.

“On the plus side, we’ve got three days this week to get games in.”

The team played at Friends on Monday night, but results were not known at press time.

A pair of home encounters are also on the slate.

Kansas Wesleyan comes to Hillsboro on April 7 for a 1 p.m. start.

Sterling will be visiting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10.

Tennis—Both of the Bluejay tennis teams defeated Hutchinson Community College Bluedragons on Tuesday but were rained out of matches with Newman University in Wichita on Friday.

Tabor’s women’s team won six matches and lost three, while the men’s squad downed the Bluedragons 8-1.

Both teams are back in action on April 6 and 7 at the Bethel Invitational. Action begins on both days at 9 a.m.

Baseball—Weather cost the baseball team its Saturday afternoon confrontations with Bethany. No rescheduling had been announced as of press time.

Earlier in the week, the Bluejays were swept in a double-header by Ottawa.

The Braves took the opener 8-2 by roughing up the Tabor defense. Pitchers Nick Villalovos and Mike Menges were scratched for a total six unearned runs over six innings.

Ottawa added two earned runs, for a total of eight scores on eight hits. As a team, Tabor committed three errors in the game.

Tyson Bauerle and J.D. Poplin each recored three hits; Poplin scored both of Tabor’s runs. Tyler Sizemore went 2-for-4 with a double and a run driven in.

The second game went to Ottawa, 3-2 in nine innings.

It opened with Tabor taking a 2-0 lead as the Bluejays batted around, with Roger Schroeder and Sizemore plating the opening runs in the top half of the first inning.

When Wes Stancher took the mound in the bottom half, the game turned into a pitcher’s duel.

Stancher strung together six shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks before handing the lead to Sizemore in the seventh.

Ottawa rallied for two runs to send the game into extra frames, and the Braves brought in the winning run two innings later.

Matt Bolles went the distance for Ottawa and put together eight straight shutout innings to earn his first win of the season.

Coming—Tabor played at Saint Mary on Tuesday, but results were not available at press time.

Tabor plays on Saturday at Manhattan Christian College.
