A card shower is requested for Adolph Backhus of Herington to honor his 85th birthday.
He was born Dec. 21, 1919, in Tampa. On May 2, 1948, he was married to Mary Anna Lueker. He owned and operated a dairy farm northeast of Hope, retired in 1983 and moved to Herington in 1994.
His children are LaVerda Knaak and husband Keith of Leavenworth and Jody Munson and husband John of Culver. He has four grandchildren.

Hillsboro MB Church hosts carolling night
Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church will host a night of carolling beginning at 5 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 19, at the Solomon L. Loewen Natural Science Center on the Tabor College Campus in Hillsboro.
Horse-drawn hayracks will be available for those who would like to carol around the community. For those choosing to stay inside, there will be a carol sing with special music in the lobby of the science building.
Organizers ask participants to bring a plate of "goodies" to share with others. Chili and hot drinks will be provided.

Hillsboro FFA group organizes food drive
The Hillsboro FFA is sponsoring a food-drive drawing on Friday, Dec. 17, during the Hillsboro High School vs. Ellinwood home basketball games.
The FFA is inviting the public to bring a non-perishable food item or make a $1 donation for an opportunity to win homemade desserts or fruit and meat assortments.
The drawing will be held during half-time of the boys' varsity game.
All proceeds will be donated to a local food bank.
Hillsboro UM Church choir to sing cantata
The Hillsboro United Methodist Church choir will present a cantata at the 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday, Dec. 19.
Directed by Allen Ediger, the cantata is a narrated, choral celebration titled "How Great Our Joy!" written by Lloyd Larson and Douglas E. Wagner.

HES musical set for Thursday at HHS
The third and fourth grade classes at Hillsboro Elementary School will present the musical "I Need a Little Christmas Vacation" at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 16, at the Hillsboro High School auditorium.
Director is Shirley Baltzer, HES vocal/music teacher.

Farmerettes to meet Thursday, Dec. 16
The Farmerettes will meet at 1 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 16, in the home of Irma Koop of Hillsboro.
The group will gather for its annual Christmas dinner, and refreshments will be served beginning at 12:45 p.m.
Marion library selling Christmas ornaments
The Marion City Library is selling the the fourth in a series of Christmas ornaments.
The 2004 ornament costs $5 and depicts the Marion Hill building. A few ornaments of previous years are still available.
The ornaments may be purchased at the library, Central National Bank, Marion Pharmacy and the City of Marion office.
"These make great Christmas presents," according to the library staff.

HHS/HMS concert set for Dec. 20
Hillsboro High School and Hillsboro Middle school band and choral departments will present a Holiday Concert at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 20, in the HHS gymnasium.
Performing under the direction of band director Gregg Walker and choral director Dave Clark will be the seventh and eighth grade band, the high school band, jazz bands, sixth-grade choir, seventh and eighth grade choirs, Mixed Chorus and Concert Choir.
The public is invited.
Hillsboro Leo Club serves soup supper
The Hillsboro Leo Club will serve a soup supper beginning at 4:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 17, in the Hillsboro High School Commons.
In conjunction with the Hillsboro vs. Ellinwood basketball game, the supper will include homemade chili, noodle soup, bread and pie.
The Leo Club is sponsored by the two Hillsboro Lions clubs for youth ages 12 to 17 serving the community.
Proceeds from the supper will help the Leo Club as they continue to serve the Hillsboro community and any needs brought to the club's attention.
