Hillsboro High School's inducted 14 new members into the Trojan Chapter of the National Honor Society on Monday. The 30-minute induction ceremony was held at the Historic Church on the Tabor College campus.
The 14 students inducted into the NHS this year were Emily Bebermeyer, Josh Boese, Peter Fast, Danielle Hagen, Derek Hamm, Susie Janzen, Robert Jost, Greta Kliewer, Meredith Ktiewer, Kyle Kroeker, Laura Lindsay, Stephanie Loewen, Victor Rogers and Jenny Terrell.
Students who were inducted last year and are active members of the NHS are Gina Andrews, Katie Baltzer, Marissa Diener, Sara Hamm, Kelsey Kaufman, Emily Railsback and Emily Ratzlaff.
Terry Bebermeyer is the adviser for the local chapter.
The National Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for high school students.
Members of the Trojan Chapter of the National Honor Society have earned their membership by demonstrating the four qualities held in high esteem by the society: character, service, leadership and scholarship.
To be eligible for membership, students must be a junior or senior and have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.70. Qualifying candidates are then evaluated on character, leadership and service.
Candle ceremony
planned for Dec. 12
The Marion County Compassionate Friends will hold a candle-light remembrance ceremony at 6:45 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 12, in the courtyard of Marion Presbyterian Church.
The church is located at Lawrence and Elm streets, one block north of Central Park.
The Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting is an annual event, held the second Sunday in December. It is an international support group for families who have experienced the death of a child.
The candle lighting is an act of remembrance with the theme "That Their Light May Always Shine."
To honor children who have died, candles are lit for one hour at 7 p.m. local time, starting in New Zealand and continuing around the world.
While this is a global event, candle-lighting may take place in an individual home or in organized ceremonies.
The Marion County observance will include readings, music, candle lighting and a reading of remembered children's names.
All who want to honor a deceased child of any age are welcome to participate.

Canton seniors plan
soup supper Dec. 4
The Canton Senior Center is planning a soup supper from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, at the center located at 112 S. Main.
The menu will include vegetable soup, chili, relish, pie, coffee and tea.
The public is invited to participate by free-will donation. Proceeds will be used for building repairs.
Bob Hein attends
annual conference
Attending the 29th annual Conference of the Kansas Association of Counties, Commissioner Bob Hein of Marion County joined more than 600 Kansas county officials, Nov. 22 through Nov. 23, in Overland Park.
Activities included the following:
-- A pre-conference Workshop, "Six Keys to Productive Meetings," opened the conference.
-- The keynote presentation, "Circle the Wagons...I think They Have us Surrounded," was delivered by Ron Willis.
-- The Kansas Association of Counties' 2005 Legislative Policy Statement was adopted.
-- Attendees were given an opportunity to meet with colleagues and discuss issues affecting county government.
Quilt guild to meet
Dec. 6 in Hillsboro
The Country Stitchers Quilt Guild will meet at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 6, at Hillsboro United Methodist Church.
Members are reminded that this will be the annual Christmas party, and each member is asked to bring a food item and a gift for the exchange.
Solid-Waste Board
to meet Dec. 8
The regular meeting of the Central Kansas Regional Solid Waste Authority Board will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 8, at the McPherson Area Solid Waste Utility, located at 1431 17th Ave.
Board members representing Harvey, Marion and McPherson counties will be in attendance.
Agenda items will include claims and invoices, Waste Recycling and Reduction Committee report, discussion and manager's report.
The meeting is open to the public.
Goessel library offers chance to erase fines
Patrons of the Goessel Public Library are invited to begin the New Year with a clean slate by donating one non-perishable item per dollar owed to erase overdue-book fines.
The items will be donated to the Tabor Church Food Pantry.
The library staff encourages patrons to visit the library to check their fine status.
"With over $100 worth of fines, we can make a big difference," said Laura Dailey, library director.
Winter library hours are 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday; 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday; and 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday.
HHS madrigal dinner
set for Dec. 3 & 4
The Hillsboro High School vocal music department will present Ye Olde English Madrigal Dinner at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3 and Dec. 4, in the Hillsboro Middle School gymnasium.
Tickets are $12.50 per seat and may be purchased in advance at the HHS office or at the door the night of the performance.
The public is invited to enjoy an evening of dining and musical entertainment.
King's Daughters
to meet Dec. 7
King's Daughters ladies group of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Marion will meet at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 7, in the church fellowship hall.
The meeting will include a potluck meal and gift exchange with secret sisters. Ladies are asked to bring a covered dish and a gift for their secret sister.
Ladies without a secret sister have the option of participating in the gift exchange and may bring a wrapped gift.
Childcare will be provided.
Marion church holds
annual holiday meal
Emmanuel Baptist Church of Marion held its annual Thanksgiving potluck meal on Nov. 21.
During the morning service, 67 shoeboxes were offered for a dedication service before being taken to a drop-off site for Samaritan's Purse, a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization.
The next potluck meal will be held at 5 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 12. It will be an Agape Love Dinner followed by Christmas carolling.
Open house set for
county lake & park
Marion County Lake and Park families and friends are invited to an open house from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 19, at the home of Judy and Bob Priest, 26 Lakeshore Drive.
A car caravan will leave Kingfisher's Inn parking lot at 6 p.m. to view the Christmas lights at the lake. Participants will return to the Priest home to enjoy hot cider and coffee.
This will be the second-annual Christmas Fest for all current and former lake neighbors enjoying music, art, visiting and Christmas treats at the Priest residence.
The ambiance of the home includes a view of the lake, carefully crafted cabinetry, music, a bath decor of African artifacts and an extensive collection of watercolors and oils by artist Howard Bish, who is Judy's father.
The work by Bish includes landscapes, still life and portraiture. A seasonal portrait on display depicts Jesus as a boy.
Marion church offers
baby-sitting service
Eastmoor United Methodist Church will offer free baby-sitting for parents of the Marion Community from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Friday, Dec. 10, at the church.
The church childcare workers will baby-sit children from ages 3 to 11. Snacks and drinks will be provided, but dinner is not included.
"The church wants to touch the families of our community in a helpful way, because we are concerned about family life and want to help persons with small children," said Judy Priest, chair of the Outreach Team. "This is a way of helping that will mean something to parents. We really want families to take advantage of this offer."

Grief support group
to meet Dec. 6
The next meeting of an area-wide grief support group will meet at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 6, at 415 S. Lincoln in Hillsboro.
Open to anyone 65 and under, the group focuses on people who have lost a spouse or loved one.
The meeting will include a short devotional time and prayer, sharing time, informal visiting and refreshments.
The group meets twice a month, on the first and third Mondays, and there is no charge to attend.

Ebenfeld MB Church
A Christmas Christian Endeavor program will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 5, at Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church, 1498 Kanza, Hillsboro.
The program will include a children's story, Christmas meditation and vocal and instrumental musical numbers.
Refreshments will be served following the service.
