The Christmas Open House at the Schaeffler House, located at the corner of Grand Avenue and Jefferson Street in Hillsboro, will be from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 28.
The stately Edwardian house, built in 1909, will be open with no charge to the public. Simple refreshments will be served as long as they last.
During the event, strolling carolers will entertain visitors with festive Christmas songs. Costumed volunteers will reenact Ida Schaeffler, the Schaefflers' maid and other members of the family.
The house will be decorated as authentically as possible for the 1910 period.

Marion County Economic Development Council has issued funds to eight Marion County representatives, allowing them to recently attend a conference in Great Bend.
The conference, "A Field of Green," focused on building the agri-tourism industry in the state.
A total of $480 in funds was dispersed to pay conference fees.

to give to others
Emmanuel Baptist Church of Marion recently held a shoebox wrapping and packing party for Operation Christmas Child.
Church youth wrapped and packed 26 boxes for the project. Activity refreshments included pizza, ice-cream sundaes and drinks.

Hillsboro Public Library is celebrating Children's Book Week, which started Monday, Nov. 15, and continues through Saturday, Nov. 20.
Children checking out books this week will have a chance to win prizes.

to meet Dec. 7
King's Daughters of Emmanuel Baptist Church will meet at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 7, at the church in Marion.
The meeting will include a potluck meal and a gift exchange. The ladies are asked to bring a covered dish and a gift for their Secret Sister.
Cell-phone donations for violence victims
Delores Johnson of Hillsboro is collecting old/unused cell phones to donate to domestic-violence groups located in Newton and Hutchinson.
The groups in the two communities also help domestic-violence victims in Marion County.
Phones donated will be programmed to dial 911 only.
"A large percentage of us don't realize how lucky we are," Johnson said. "We don't have to deal with domestic violence in our daily lives. This will let the victims know there are people out there who care."

Red Cross blood drive set for Nov. 22
The Hillsboro American Red Cross blood drive will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, Nov. 22, at Trinity Mennonite Church, 211 S. Elm.
Blood donors must be 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health.
The Red Cross reminds the public that about 60 percent of the population is eligible to donate, but only about 5 percent actually give blood.
"Whether you bravely become a new donor, or already have a noble, life-saving tradition as a regular donor, we need you at the American Red Cross blood drive," said Patti Robinson with the Sunflower Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Thanksgiving service
to be held Nov. 21
The annual Community Thanksgiving Service will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 21, at the Hillsboro High School gymnasium.
The service will include a time for singing and sharing. Hillsboro Elementary School and Tabor College choirs will also perform.
A free-will offering will be accepted on behalf of the Hillsboro Area Ministerial Association, and a food offering will be accepted for Main Street Ministries.
Food items needed are small bottles of cooking oil, baking supplies, cereal and meal kits. Organizers request no canned goods.

Alpha Omega group
meets in Hillsboro
The Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International met Nov. 6, at the Wiebe Media Center, on the campus of Hillsboro High School.
The society sponsored its traditional silent auction of crafts and food items. The funds will be used for educator incentive awards given to college students studying to be teachers.
Guest speaker was Kakim Kunantaev, who shared his experiences of early childhood and education in Kazakastan, formerly part of the Soviet Union.
The next chapter meeting will be a holiday birthday celebration on Saturday, Dec. 4, in Marion.
HHS FFA collecting for hurricane victims
The Hillsboro High School FFA chapter is participating in "Operation: Living to Serve," a service activity designed to gather needed materials for victims of hurricanes in the southern states.
The Hillsboro FFA chapter, along with 24 other chapters from the South Central District, is asking for donations of any type of clothing, school supplies, canned-food items, bottled water, soap and household supplies.
Donations are being accepted through Friday, Nov. 19.
Drop boxes for donated items are available at Dale's Supermarket, Vogt's Hometown Market, the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce office and the office and agriculture department at HHS.
Open house for
Helen Schmidt's 80th
Helen Schmidt will celebrate her 80th birthday with an open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 5, at the AGAPE Senior Center in Goessel.
She was born Dec. 5, 1924, in Goessel. On Aug. 12, 1948, she was married to Raymond S. Schmidt, who has passed away.
Her children are Pauline and Calvin Buller of Hillsboro and Dwight and Susie Schmidt of Newton.
