Harpist Buchanan

concert Nov. 13

Gospel-jazz harpist Greg Buchanan will be featured in concert at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, at Marion Christian Church.

Buchanan has toured the United States offering concerts for more than 20 years and recorded nine albums of harp music.

Playing three different harps, he will feature hymns, praise and worship music, favorite gospel songs and original compositions.

The concert will last about 90 minutes.

"It's all about the love of the Lord," Buchanan said. "I invite people to come out for my Marion concert."

A free-will offering will be taken.

IGT Apartments

open house Nov. 14

An open house at Indian Guide Terrace Apartments in Peabody will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 14, at 501 N. Vine.

The Peabody Housing Authority has improved the grounds and building at the apartments. Improvements include a new roof, exterior paint and a new sign for the front of the building. These improvements were funded by the housing authority and family and friends of Harold "Bill" Richmond.

IGT Apartments operates as housing for persons 62 and over, the handicapped and the disabled.

Visitors at the open house will be able to tour the facility and vacant apartments.

Card shower request

for Schimpf's 80th

The children of Pauline Gertrude (Spachek) Schimpf request a card shower to celebrate her 80th birthday.

She was born Nov. 16, 1924, to Thomas and Mary (Neuwirth) Spachek in Pilsen.

Cards may be sent to her in care of Marion Manor, 1500 E. Lawrence, Marion, KS 66861.

Ebenfeld MB Church

offers program

A Thanksgiving Christian Endeavor Program will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 14, at Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church, 1498 Kanza, Hillsboro.

The program will include talks on being thankful for school family, church and country, and vocal and piano musical numbers.

The public is invited.

Children's Book Week at Marion library

Marion City Library will celebrate Children's Book Week, Monday through Saturday, Nov. 15 through Nov. 20.

Each participating child will receive an Arthur poster. Each time they visit the library during book week, children may register to win a free book.

Library staff reminds parents that sharing time together with a good book creates a special bond between parents and their children. It also helps build a love of books and the skills children will need to succeed in school.

Marion ornament

now available

New Christmas ornaments are available for sale at the Marion library, city office, Central National Bank and Marion Pharmacy.

Fourth in a series, the ornament this year depicts the Marion Hill Building and costs $5.

A set of all four in the series is also available for $17.50, while supplies last.

Prairie Arts mall

celebrates birthday

Prairie Arts arts and crafts mall in Burns is celebrating its first anniversary with a five-day birthday celebration to say thank you to customers and the community.

The celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, Nov. 16 through Nov. 18; 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, Nov. 19; and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 20.

Activities include refreshments and entertainment. A drawing for a free prize will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, and the winner does not have to be present.

Musical entertainment will include the Wildwood Dulcimer Club and other acoustic musicians performing Friday evening. On Saturday morning, Rod Koehn will play the mountain dulcimer.

New artists have been added this year in addition favorites from last year.

Look for the following items for sale: handmade soaps, woodcrafts, floral craft, wheat weaving, paintings, polished-stone jewelry, crocheted gifts, stained glass, stagecoach and buckboard wagon coffee tables, mountain dulcimers, collectible wooden cars and trucks, tie-dyed clothing, quilted gift items, gift baskets, prairie primitives and roosters.

Toy drive in Marion

accepting donations

Toys for Toddlers Toy Drive, a gift-sharing program sponsored by Marion Auto Supply, is accepting toys through Dec. 19.

Marion Auto Supply, located at 115 E. Main, will be the official drop-off site for new, unwrapped toy donations for children of all ages.

"We are working with Marion Community Christmas Project, and their volunteers will be sorting and organizing the toys to distribute," said Doug Regnier, store manager.

"We seek the support of every person in the community to help make this year's event a success and give every child a holiday to remember."

All toys from the toy drive will be donated to the local Community Christmas Project, serving Marion, Florence and Centre school districts.

Family support group to meet Nov. 16

Caring for the Caregiver, a family community support group sponsored by St. Luke Living Center of Marion, will hold its first meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 16, in the St. Luke Clinic basement.

Ruth Reed, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner-Care, will present "Health of the Caregiver-How do we Take Care of Ourselves?"

Free training for

foster parents Nov. 18

Free training for foster parents will be available from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 18, at Holy Family Activity Center, 415 N. Cedar, Marion.

KVC Behavioral HealthCare and Children's Alliance will sponsor the presentation focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of children with bi-polar disorders.

The speaker will be Wes Jones, director of the children's department of the Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas in Emporia.

PBHS musical set for

Nov. 13, 14

Peabody-Burns High School will present the musical "Ducktails and Bobbysox" at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 13 and 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 14, in the Brown Building Concert Hall.

Tickets are available from cast members, director Steven Glover, the PBHS office, Peabody State Bank, Peabody Hardware and Lumber and the Community National Bank in Burns.

Veterans' dinner

Nov. 13 in Hillsboro

The Hillsboro American Legion will host a Veterans' Pork Chop Dinner at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, at the American Legion hall.

The dinner will include grilled pork chop, baked potato, coleslaw, baked beans and french bread.

Tickets purchased in advance are $7, and tickets purchased at the door are $8.

"Annie" at CGHS

on Nov. 12, 13

The Canton-Galva Music Department will present "Annie," a musical in two acts, at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12 and 13, in the CGHS gymnasium.

Under the direction of Bill Olson, Jessica Janzen will play Annie, Tyler Becker will play Daddy Warbucks, Tiffany Wedel will play Grace and Chelsi Cramer will play Miss Hannigan.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students, and no charge for children under 6.

Benefit Nov. 14

for Terri Thompson

A benefit hunter's breakfast and lunch for Terri Thompson of Ramona will be held Sunday, Nov. 14, at the Cheers II building in Ramona.

The breakfast will begin at 6 a.m., lunch will be served at noon, and free-will donations will be accepted.

Thompson was involved in a single-car accident Nov. 5 south of Ramona. At press time, she was in critical condition at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

She and husband Jim have five children, and Thompson was the sole source of income for the family.

She is a fire fighter and also works as a Certified Nurse Aide at Parkside Homes Inc. and Hillsboro Community Medical Center Long Term Care Unit in Hillsboro.

A trust fund has been established at First National Bank of Hope, fund buckets have been placed at businesses in Hillsboro, and canned goods for the family will be accepted at a drop-off site at Parkside Homes.

six new members

The Tampa Lions inducted six new members during a meeting on Oct. 28.

Inducted were Lori and Tom Moldenhauer, Ginger Cliffton, Mark and Vicky O'Dell and Frank Harmon.

The induction proceedings were conducted by Marvin Funk of Hillsboro, past district governor, and Marvin Rediker of Durham, regional chairman.

Meeting activities included a light meal and a business meeting led by president Jim Clemmer.

In attendance was past district governor Bob Courtney, past district governor and his wife of Pratt. Other guests were from Tampa, Durham, Hillsboro and Herington.

Mission worship

service set for Nov. 14

The Harvest Mission Worship Service of First Mennonite Church will be held at 10:35 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 14, at the Hillsboro church.

Guest speaker will be Dwight Regier, director of a program offering Discipleship, Encounter, Outreach. DEO involves 14-month learning and mission opportunities for young adults.

At 9:30 a.m., Regier will explain the three phases of the DEO program-three months of training, nine months of cross-cultural experience and two months of internship with a mentor.

Hesston and Bethel colleges participate in the program and offer college credit.

The public is invited to both the 9:30 a.m. and the 10:35 a.m. services.

GOP women host

regular meeting

The regular meeting of the Marion County Republican Women was held Oct. 21 at The Daily Grind in Marion.

The main topic of the meeting was "Encourage the Right to Vote," and was met with enthusiasm by those in attendance, according to organizers.

The Candidates Forum held in July was reported as informative.

The next meeting of the MCRW will be in January.

SRS meeting/lunch

Nov. 12 in Hillsboro

The stakeholders/partners of Kansas Social and Rehabilitation Services are invited to a community luncheon meeting from noon to 1:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12, at Hillsboro Pizza Hut.

Hosted by the Marion Country SRS office, the Morris County pre-closure meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss how consumers and community partners continue to access the SRS services after the office closed in August.

The presentation will be held during the Marion County Interagency meeting. Information about county, state and local organizations agreeing to serve as access sites throughout the county will be discussed.

Veterans Day

pilgrimage in Pilsen

The second annual Veterans Day pilgrimage by the military will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 11, in Pilsen.

The Most Reverend Edwin O'Brian, archbishop of the military, is scheduled to be the main celebrant. Chaplains and visiting priests are invited to concelebrate with him.

A meal will be served for visitors, and proceeds will go into the Father Kapuan Fund.

The public is invited to the pilgrimage, which includes Mass and an outdoor ceremony.

Benefit soup dinner

to aide Hett family

A benefit hunters' soup dinner will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Tampa Senior Center.

The dinner will help the Troy Hett family following a fire in the their home. Free-will donations will be accepted.

Sponsors are Prairie Pals, the Tampa Community Association and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Thrivent will provide supplemental funds.

Pancake breakfast

Nov. 13 in Marion

Eastmoor United Methodist Church will hold its annual opening-of-hunting-season pancake breakfast from 5 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Marion church.

The meal will include all-you-can-eat pancakes, eggs, sausage and drinks. Free-will donations will be accepted.

The public is invited.

Appreciation banquet in Marion, Nov. 22

The city of Marion and rural Marion residents are invited to the Marion Farm/City Appreciation Banquet at 6 p.m., Monday, Nov. 22, in the Marion Municipal Building.

Sponsored by the Marion Chamber of Commerce, the banquet will include a steak fry and door prizes will be awarded, according to chairman Roger W. Hannaford III.

At 7 p.m., Jim French, with the Kansas Rural Center, will present a program of songs and music celebrating the rural lifestyle.
