We wish for George W. Bush, our recently re-elected president, the courage, determination and wisdom needed to take on some of the politically sensitive issues facing our country-health care and Social Security, the expanding national debt, and peaceful stability in Iraq and the Middle East to name a few.
Second-term presidents face a quandry. On the one hand, without having to worry about re-election, a president potentially has the freedom to make unpopular but prudent decisions. At the same time, no threat of re-election gives a president's opponents courage to undermine the initiatives of a "lame duck."
We hope our president will become the great unifier as he once promised to be, prompting the best effort from friends and foes alike-for the nation's sake. -DR
