With clippers in hand, Kirk Stierwalt explains the fine points of trimming and grooming a show steer for exhibition to about three dozen participants at a two-day Stierwalt Showcattle School on Friday and Saturday at the Marion County Fairgrounds in Hillsboro. Stierwalt, who hails from Leedey, Okla., travels the region helping people of all ages acquire the skills needed to put the "competitive edge" on their side. Stierwalt says his clinics provide “a wealth of knowledge including many things that have taken years of being in the business to learn.” Participants included several 4-Hers from Marion County, the rest of Kansas and several surrounding states.

Marion County is among the 300 rural counties across the country and 43 in Kansas that are more prosperous than the nation as a whole.

Listening to, reading or watching the latest news could lead today’s consumer to believe this country’s farmers are one of the main reasons for the recent increase in food prices at the supermarket. Producers in agriculture would argue this simply is not true.

Corps of Engineers to explain lake fluctuation plan PDF Print E-mail

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers invites the public to review a proposed lake level fluctuation plan for Marion Reservoir.

The public meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 3 at the Marion Reservoir Project Office, 2105 Pawnee Road, Marion.

The purpose of the water fluctuation plan is to enhance fishing and hunting opportunities and to control blue-green algae blooms.

The proposal is sponsored by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. If implemented, the plan would take effect in October.

For more information, or for questions regarding the meeting, call the Corps of Engineers office at 620-382-2101.

With $10 to $11 wheat at the marketplace, thanks to volatile world conditions and a wheat shortage, there’s reason for local farmers to hope.
