Sixty-six 4-Hers from Marion County and beyond competed April 28 in the annual Spring Beef Show at the Marion County Fairgrounds in Hillsboro.
The show is an indicator of the growth rate and condition of animals intended for show in upcoming county fairs, according to Rickey Roberts, Marion County extension agent who coordinated the event.
Area youth will be up early on Saturday, May 19, trimming and preparing for the yearly showing of their dairy goats at the Marion County Fairgrounds in Hillsboro.
A showmanship clinic is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. led by accomplished youth showman. At this day-long event there will be the Toy, Tool and Miscellaneous drawing, a goat photography contest and exhibition, management and tool identification contest, and a goat obstacle coarse competition.
Show time begins at 9 a.m. with check in between 7 and 8:45 a.m. Breed classes available are Alpine, LaMancha, Nigerian Dwarf, Nubian, Oberhasli, Sable, Toggenberg and Recorded Grade.

Open house…
To celebrate his quarter-century of cutting hair in HIllsboro, Randy Wiens is planning an open house at Silver Shears during his Friday and Saturday hours. He is offering refreshments, gifts, door prizes and a drawing for $25 in haircuts.
Randy Wiens jokes that he’s still trying to figure out what to do with his life. In the meantime, he’ll keep barbering.
This Saturday, Wiens will be celebrating 25 years of cutting hair in Hillsboro at his Silver Shears shop on Main Street.
“I was going to go to Hutch Juco when I graduated from Inman High, but I didn’t know why,” he said about his career choice.

Emprise Bank received approval last Tuesday from the Hillsboro City Council to proceed with a revised plan for constructing a new drive-through lane at its Main and Grand location.
In late November, the council denied an initial proposal from the bank, even though the plan had been recommended for approval by the city’s Planning Commission.
Two Riffel families enjoyed success at the Kansas Classic Meat Goat Show in Hutchinson this weekend. Kailyn, Karl and Kyle Riffel each led class-winning entries, receiving embroidered director’s chairs. Callie Riffel placed second in class. Kyle’s entry was named the champion lightweight division winner and later reserve grand champion overall. Karl's class-winner was named reserve champion lightweight. Callie and Kailyn are the daughters of Jeff and Tana Riffel of Lincolnville. Karl and Kyle are the sons of James and Beth Riffel of Tampa. All attend Centre School and are members of the Tampa Triple Ts 4-H Club. Pictured with their animals are (from left) Kailyn, Callie, Kyle and Karl.
