The Hillsboro swim team placed behind Solomon and ahead of Moundridge in the 3-team event held at Hillsboro Saturday.
It took most of six months and hundreds of thousands of man-hours of borderline idleness, but 2008 finally produced one of those pure “sports moments” that fans will think back on a decade from now. Tiger Woods came through in the clutch with a 12-foot lead-tying birdie putt on the 18th hole at the US Open on Sunday night and reminded us why sports matters.

The Hillsboro swim team opened the 2008 season Saturday at Hesston, scoring 443 points and placing second to Lindsborg (511). Peabody (315) placed third and Hesston (191) finished fourth.
The Hot Rods, a Hillsboro-based 14-and-under fastpitch softball team, is off to a fast start this summer with a 19-2-2 record so far. The team has won tournaments in Council Grove and Hillsboro, placed second in a Salina tournament and third in a Clay Center tournament. Two recent sports-related stories naturally caught my attention, which started a lively discussion with my agent, I.M. Slick.
One story said the NBA will fine players next season for clear cases of flopping. The other involved the likelihood of Major League Baseball using replay in some situations.
