Pete Richert isn't letting an amputated leg keep him from running after his dreams
Pete Richert may have lost a leg, but he hasn’t lost heart.
The Hillsboro native, whose left leg was amputated above the knee after a roadside-bomb incident Feb. 22 while serving in Iraq with fellow National Guardsmen, continues his rehabilitation at Fort Sam Houston near San Antonio, Texas.
The former standout distance runner at Hillsboro High School and Tabor College is not only accepting the prospect of a future with a prosthetic leg, he’s making plans to return to running.
About 50 people turned out on a beautiful Saturday evening for a free concert on on the lawn of the Schaeffler House Museum at Jefferson and Grand streets. It was the first of two concerts planned by the Friends of the Hillsboro Museums as a community builder and fund-raiser. The group served a sloppy joe sandwich meal. The Spirit-N-Celebration boys ensemble from Hillsboro High School, pictured above and at right, sang as a warmup to Bob Delk and the Boys, a popular local instrumental group. Marion County drivers will be able to renew their licenses at the county treasurer’s office in Marion for the foreseeable future.
Congressman Jerry Moran announced May 4 that county treasurers across the state will continue to process driver’s license renewals in the rural areas of Kansas.
