Both Hillsboro and Marion came home from the Class 3-2-1A state wrestling tournament in Hays this weekend with one medal winner.
For Hillsboro, senior Frankie Martin made the most of his state debut, finishing sixth at 171 pounds. Dillon Wildin led Marion with a sixth-place finish at 135 pounds.
Clay Shewey, fully recovered from an ankle sprain on Thursday,
poured in 28 points to lead Hillsboro to a 73-61 win at Southeast of
Saline in the first round of sub-state play Monday.
Relatively speaking, it was only a small surge by Smoky Valley late in
the first half. But the 6-2 finish by the Vikings seemed to tip the
scales against Hillsboro, as the visitors went on to win 39-29 Thursday
in the final regular-season game for both teams.
Centre—Hamilton proved no match for the Cougars, who rolled to a
66-36 victory Feb. 18. Trevor Troutt scored 21 points along with 12
rebounds. Zach Slayden scored 10 points.
To make it the high school state wrestling tournament even once in a career is no small feat. To qualify three out of four years is rare.
But to compete all season with the constant threat of a recurring shoulder injury—and then achieve a dominant season and a third state tournament berth to boot approaches legend.
