Hillsboro girls prevail at Haven, Hillsboro boys overpowered in 2nd half

Bina tossed in eight points for Hillsboro.    The Hillsboro girls took a huge step toward at least a share of the Central Kansas League crown, as well as securing the top seed in their sub-state tournament, with a 46-39 win at Haven Friday night.

Meanwhile, the Trojan boys took a serious second-half stumble and now find their hopes for a home game in the first round of sub-state in jeopardy following a 58-35 humbling by the Wildcats.

TC splits games against Friends

Tabor split their games with Friends Thursday night. The women were unable to hold off a 42-34 Falcon victory and dropped to 14-3 in the KCAC, 18-9 overall, while the men defeated Friends by three, 59-56, and improved to 13-4, 14-12.

WOMEN – The Bluejay offense struggled to get shots to fall in Thursday’s 42-34 loss to new KCAC leader Friends, finishing the night with 25 percent shooting from the field (13-53) and just 8 percent from behind the arc (2-24).

The game began with the Bluejays in front, 5-0, and Tabor built a six-point, 11-5 lead when Hannah Paust made a second-chance basket with 11:02 left in the opening half. But Tabor stalled at 11, and could not get a shot to fall the next six and a half minutes. Friends seized the...

Marion girls defeat Inman, boys fall in double OT

The Marion teams split their games with Inman Tuesday night. The girls won by three, 34-31, while the boys dropped a heartbreaker in double-overtime, 56-54.

GIRLS – The Warriors kept pace with the visiting Teutons Tuesday, despite facing some height on the Inman squad and playing without starter Kelli Hess, who coach Kelly Robson said missed the game because of illness. Although Marion endured a five-point deficit midway through the opening quarter, the Warriors narrowed the Inman lead to 10-7 at the end of the opening quarter when Megan Richmond made a basket. Hillsboro sweeps past Halstead with lopsided wins

Schlehuber missed this shot but tossed in 10 points for the game.    The first half was about all it took for the Hillsboro basketball teams to determine the outcome of Tuesday’s games at home against Halstead. The Trojan girls led by 24 at intermission on the way to a 66-30 victory, while the boys led by 25 at halftime en route to a 46-19 decision. The running clock was in play the entire fourth quarter in both games.

GIRLS - Hillsboro dominated the Dragons out of the gate even though the Trojans led by only eight after one quarter, 19-11. Turning up the defense another notch, Hillsboro shut out the Dragons for the first 5:11 of the second quarter while racking up 12 points to take a 31-11 lead. By halftime the lead stood at 32-17.

Tabor sweeps Saint Mary at home

The Bluejays recorded two big wins over the University of Saint Mary Saturday on senior night. The women defeated Saint Mary 61-55 and improved to 14-2 in the KCAC, 18-8 overall to remain locked with Friends for first in the conference, and the men defeated the KCAC-leading Spires, 77-75, and improved to 12-4, 13-12.

WOMEN – Improved execution on offense helped propel Tabor to a six-point win Saturday. Katlyn Mary gave the Bluejays a boost with 10 points in the first 3:22 for a 10-3 Tabor lead. The Bluejays led the duration of the first half. Nikki Lewis drained a three-point basket at 13:02, but the Spires closed the gap to draw within 18-17 at the 9:17 mark.
