DEATH: Frank J. Ediger, 91

Frank J. Ediger, 91, of Hillsboro, died March 3.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, (not March 8 as originally published) at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church, 300 Prairie Pointe, Hillsboro, with pastor Loyal Martin and Dave Henry officiating.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 8, at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Cemetery.

He was born Sept. 28, 1921, in Henderson, Neb.

Memorials may be made to Parkside Home.

 

 

 

 

Centre girls earn berth in Class 1A-Div. I state tournament with sub-state title

The Centre High School girls earned a berth in the Class 1A-Division I state tournament Saturday with a 60-37 win over Langdon-Fairfield in the championship game of their sub-state tournament at Burrton.

The Cougars (17-6) are seeded sixth at the state tournament in White Auditorium at Emporia. They will open play at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday against No. 3 seed St. John-Hudson (21-2). The winner of that game will take on the winner of No. 2 Hoxie (23-0) and No. 7 South Haven (16-7) in the semifinals at 3 p.m. Friday.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 Olpe (23-0) will open against No. 8 Hanover (14-7) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, and No. 4 Kensington-Thunder Ridge (18-4) and No. 5 Bucklin (17-5) will play at 8:15 p.m.

 

 

Hillsboro girls seeded fourth at state, will play Wednesday vs. Humboldt

The Hillsboro High School girls will make their fifth straight appearance at the Class 3A state tournament as the No. 4 seed. The Trojans (21-2) will open play at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday against No. 5 seeded Holcomb (19-4) in the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

If the Trojans win they would play the winner of No. 1 Burling­ton (23-0) and No. 8 Sabetha (17-6) at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 Garden Plain (22-1) will take on No. 7 Riley County (17-5) at 3 p.m. Wednesday and No. 3 Caney Valley (20-1) and No. 6 Russell (18-5) will meet at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.

With Wamego (22-1) holding the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A tournament, four teams from the Trojan Classic in January have qualified for the state tournament this...

Hillsboro girls qualify for state for 5th straight year

HHSgbSubStHavTeamChamps023 The sub-state champion Hillsboro Trojans pose for the traditional photo.    In a defensive battle royale, the Hillsboro girls held off Haven, 43-32,to win the Class 3A sub-state tournament championship on their home court. The victory means Hillsboro will make its fifth straight trip to Hutchinson next week in coach Nathan Hiebert’s six-year tenure.

Before the game was over, both teams endured long stretches of minimal scoring. Haven’s came first. The Wildcats scored the first two points of the night on a pair of free throws by Hailey Davis 1:11 into the contest, but didn’t score a field goal until McKayla Stucky scored in the lane at the 2:29 mark of the second quarter -- a stretch of 13:21 without a basket.

Hillsboro, meanwhile, got off to a relatively good start on offense, scoring 10...

Hillsboro girls win, boys lose in sub-state semifinals

Lackey tossed in 13 points for Hillsboro in the lopsided victory.   Semifinals night at the Hillsboro Class 3A sub-state tournament Friday brought mixed results for the host teams. The Trojan girls rolled into tomorrow night’s finals with a 59-28 win over Southeast of Saline. The Trojan boys, however, lost a heartbreaker to Haven in the final seconds, 44-43, to end their season.

GIRLS - It was one more mismatch for the home team -- at least once Hillsboro got through the first two minutes of the game.

Southeast actually scored the first basket, while Hillsboro missed its first five shots before Addie Lackey tied the game at the 6:04 mark with a basket. The score ignited an 8-0 run that ended led to a 17-6 margin by the end of the first quarter.
