Tabor men jump into sixth

With a 64-60 home win over Sterling Thursday night, the TaborCollege men's basketball team leapfrogged McPherson into sixth place inthe Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. Aaron Whitelaw scored 21points including a handful of late foul shots. But none of his shotswas as big as the 3-pointer he drained with 7:08 left, snapping a 49-49tie.

Before the tie breaker,  Tabor had allowed five straightpoints at the end of a 25-15 stretch that wiped out a 34-24 halftimelead. Sterling scored...

Hillsboro ends the regular season with losses to Smoky Valley

The regular season ended on a sour note for both Hillsboro High teams Thursday night (Feb. 21). The girls lost their finale 39-29 while the boys dropped a 67-54 decision after leading 36-29 at halftime.

In the girls’ game, the Trojans struggled offensively but competed well on the defensive end. The score was only 4-4 after one quarter, but a 6-2 mini-surge by the Vikings late in the second quarter gave them a 15-10 lead at intermission.

After three quarters, Smoky had bumped the lead to nine, 28-19. Then, with Rhys Pihl tossing in seven of her game-high 17 points, the Viking maintained their lead through the final period.

Dakota Kaufman scored 13 points to lead Hillsboro, who finished the season with a 9-11 mark overall and a 6-5...

SUB-STATE PAIRINGS released Wednesday

The pairings for the Class 3A Sub-state Tournament hosted by Hillsboro were released Wednes­day. Both Trojan teams will need to win their first-round games on the road in order to gain any “home-court advantage” during the tournament.

The Hillsboro boys, seeded fifth with an 11-8 record, will play at fourth-seeded Southeast of Saline (12-8) at 7 p.m. Monday in their first-round contest.

The Hillsboro girls, seeded fifth at 9-10, will travel to Marion (10-10), seeded fourth, for a first-round game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Marion boys (6-14), meanwhile, seeded seventh, will play at No. 2 Sedgwick (15-5) at 7 p.m. Monday.

Hillsboro teams roll to comfortable wins vs. Lyons (Feb. 19)

Hillsboro High girls and boys each posted comfortable wins against Lyons Tuesday night in Brown Gymnasium.

The Hillsboro girls got 20 points from Dakota Kaufman and 17 from Amy Neufeld on the way to a 58-28 victory.

The Trojans got off to a fast start, leading 14-3 after one quarter, then bumped the margin to 29-9 at intermission.

The two teams actually played to a 16-16 standoff through the third quarter, then Hillsboro limited the visitors to 3 points in the final quarter and inflated the lead to 30 points with 44 seconds to go to start the continuous clock.

Hillsboro improves to 9-10 for the season and 6-4 in league play with the victory. Lyons, which started four freshmen Tuesday, still has a single victory for the year.

Collegiate sweeps make-up games vs. HHS

Making up a game that was postponed from Feb. 12, the Hillsboro Trojans traveled to Wichita Saturday night to take on highly regarded Collegiate.

Both Trojan teams played well in spots and never quit, but on the whole both teams lacked the consistency needed to pull an upset.

The Hillsboro girls rallied from a 21-point deficit late in the third quarter and narrowed the final margin of their loss to 47-35. Hillsboro led 6-5 through the first 5:30 of the game, before Collegiate spurted to an 11-7 lead by the first break. By halftime, the Spartans had inflated the margin to 23-9.

A flurry of seven HHS turnovers over a 2:30 stretch late in the third period helped Collegiate build its largest lead of the night at 40-18 at the 1:32 mark. But...
