The Marion High School girls basketball team capped off a seasonthat will not be soon forgotten with a 70-44 loss to SE of Saline inHillsboro Saturday.

The game, for the first half at least, was considerably more competitive than the score would indicate. The Warriors trailed 17-14 after the firstframe and were down only three at halftime. Marion was unable to bounceback after a 24-point third quarter by the Trojans and was outscored 20-8 in the fourth.

The Tabor College women's basketball team ended its season Saturday at Sterling, but not without leaving every possible effort on the hardwood. Stacie Herman led the charge, scoring 22 points, including a 4-for-4 effort in the final minute of regulation. But the Warriors outscored the Bluejays 10-4 in extra time to secure a berth in the post-season championship game.

If the Bluejays were a workshop, Herman was the bandsaw, weaving through everything Sterling could throw at her with few snags along the way. Fellow senior Katie Fast played the part of both anvil and hammer, neutralizing Sterling standout Brittany Gasper with strong, physical defense, and pacing the Bluejays to a 50-39 rebounding advantage. Fast also had a colossal...

Nobody at  Robert C. Brown gymnasium would have guessed the Marion High School girls basketball team would roll out a 62-52 win Friday night—not after Whitewater-Remington held the Warriors to a total of four in the first quarter. The Broncos came in to Hillsboro as the top seed, and despite scoring on only five of 18 field goal attempts in the first frame, put Marion in a 12-4 hole headed into the second.

Then the Warriors kicked their level of play into a higher gear, and passed the Broncos like they were standing still.  After a traditional 3-point play by Katie Regier put Marion behind 17-8 at 5:37, the Warriors dialed up a full-court press that sparked an 11-0 run that mushroomed into a 29-11 Warrior lead in all of 4:16 of clock...

A huge basket by the smallest man on the court powered the Hillsboro Trojans into the sub-state finals Thursday night as the home team defeated No. 1-seeded Hutchinson Trinity, 58-57, in overtime.

Gavin Serene, Hillsboro’s Mighty Mite at 5-feet-7 (allegedly), drained a 3-point basket from the left wing with 17 seconds left in the extra period. When Daniel Jost stole the ball with less than seven seconds left, Serene’s basket became the game-winner, capping a dramatic come-from-behind victory for the fifth-seeded Trojans.

Hillsboro got off to a blazing start, thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Clay Shewey in the first 1:20 of the game. But Trinity showed why they came in as the top seed, and matched the Trojans basket for basket...

If basketball games were decided like Olympic figure skating--onlargely subjective estimates of the quality of a performance based onaesthetics and degree of difficulty--the Tabor College women'sbasketball team would have defeated Kansas Wesleyan by considerablymore than five points, 52-47, Wednesday night in Hillsboro. But even inthat case, Stacie Herman would have earned a gold medal for hergame-breaking acrobatic 2-point pullup jumper with a hair more thannothing left on the shot clock.

Herman's pivotal score camewith the Bluejays ahead 48-47 after their 32-21 halftime lead dried tonothing with 1:39 left. Kayleen Dittmer tied the game for KansasWesleyan with a pair of foul shots followed by a point-blank basket, and the...
