The Marion High School football team battled a high-powered Hoisington team to a standstill for three quarters Friday (Oct. 3), and broke through with the 6-0 gamewinner 1:22 into the fourth frame. Drew Maddox did the honors, capping off a drive that began at the Marion 20 after the Cardinals missed a field goal try late in the third quarter. Marion ran 11 plays, including a pristine punt fake that saw a direct snap to Mitchell Leppke, who ran like a jitterbug for six yards on fourth-and-2...

The Tabor College football team stopped Friends University only once in the first half, forcing and recovering a fumble to end the Falcons second drive Saturday. Trailing 7-0, the Bluejays marched 25 yards on seven plays—18 of which came on a thunderous run by fullback Seth Ramsey—but ended up stymied on the Friends 19. In came the field goal unit, but porous blocking combined with a botched snap did not give kicker Marcus Manny a chance to put the Bluejays on the board. The Falcons took over on their own 27 and quarterback Alex Melugin promptly completed a 73-yard touchdown pass to Abe Kersting with 1:10 left in the first quarter.

That for all intents and purposes ended the game, but the Falcons piled on, taking a 42-0 halftime...

Hillsboro scored three unanswered touchdowns in the final quarter and half to pull out a 28-14 come-from-behind homecoming win over Sterling Friday night (Oct. 3) at Reimer Field.

The Trojans got on the scoreboard first when Ishmael Morris scored from three yards out with 4:27 left in the first period. Jake Wiebe added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

On the first play of the second quarter, HHS fumbled away the football and Sterling took over on the Trojan 14-yard line. Five play later Matt Foster was in the end zone for the Black Bears. The kick was no good, for a 7-6 score that lasted to halftime.

Sterling’s Foster scored the game’s next touchdown with 7:57 left in the third quarter, then ran in the 2-point conversion to put...

Ishmael Morris scored three first-half touchdowns to pace the Hillsboro Trojans to a 35-7 win at Lyons on Friday night (Sept. 26).

Daniel Jost actually started the scoring deluge for Hillsboro when quarterback Jacob Fish hit him in perfect stride on a long pass down the Lyons sideline. The 38-yard play came with 9:39 left in the opening quarter. When Jacob Wiebe kicked the first of five extra points for the night, Hillsboro led 7-0.

On the next Lyons possession, quarterback Jake Craig appeared to score on a 46-yard keeper, but a chop-block penalty nullified the touchdown. The Trojans then held the Lyons out of the end zone and took over on their own 16-yard line following a missed Lyons field-goal attempt on fourth down.

The Marion High School football team shot down the Black Bears 14-0 Friday (Sept. 26) in Sterling. Sheldon Boone opened the scoring 2:39 into the second quarter on a 1-yard plunge and Mitchell Leppke capped the scoring minutes later, sprinting in with a 9-yard run with 2:57 left in the first half. Leppke then completed a 2-point conversion throw to Brad Klenda to whitewash over a missed PAT kick after Boone's run.

In the second half Sterling repeatedly ripped big-gain runs through the Warrior defense, scheming to isolate running back Matt Foster against the Marion linebackers. But for as many long runs as they mustered, the Black Bears could not muster a drive to snap the shutout.

Tylor Neil made what may have been the defensive...
