Tabor passes Spires, will play at Bethel Friday

The Tabor College volleyball team got off to a slow start in thefirst game, but finished Tuesday's win over Saint Mary (20-25, 28-26,25-17, 25-16) with a flourish.

Saint Mary played nearlyflawlessly at the outset, with nearly every Spires point ending in ahard-hit kill. Even so, Tabor led 10-7 on a kill by Gina Hullet . Groundbreaking for new athletic facility planned for Saturday (Nov. 15)

Free admission, snacks and lots of give-aways are in store for the citizens of Hillsboro Saturday.

The entire town is invited to Tabor College for the “Anticipa­tion Party and Groundbreaking Ceremony” for the new Joel Wiens Stadium immediately following the football game against Kansas Wesleyan, which begins at 1:30 p.m.

Admission to the game is free with the coupon clipped from the sports page of this week’s Hillsboro Free Press. Commemorative footballs, cups, water bottles and items from the campus bookstore will be given away. And there will be cotton candy for the children and celebration cupcakes for everyone.

Tabor splits non-conference home openers

The Tabor College men's basketball team defeated Haskell Indian Nations Univ. 97-91 Monday night in Hillsboro. The victory marks two firsts for the Bluejays this season: first home game, and first win. The women's team did not fare quite as well, coming out on the short end of a 75-71 final score against Oklahoma Wesleyan.

Brittany Roth led the women's team with 16 points, and three others finished with double-digit point totals: Eboni Sweat and Kirsten Watson each had 14, and Andrea Robinson had 10. The well-rounded effort was simply not enough to overcome a 23-point outing by Eagles forward Samantha Brant.

Tabor defeats Mac 23-19

The Tabor College football team moved into a 3-way tie for seventhplace by defeating McPherson 23-19 at Reimer Field Saturday. Led by 251rushing yards and three touchdowns from Derek Washington, the Bluejaysovercame three turnovers to secure coach Mike Gottsch's secondconsecutive conference win. After two quarters of spotty defenseagainst the McPherson passing game, Tabor intercepted Bulldogs QB JoshWhite on consecutive possessions to staunch the bleeding.

TC soccer playoffs schedules announced

With a 4-0 win over Friends Wednesday, the Tabor College women's soccer team secured fourth place in the conference as well as an opening-round home game to be played at 2 p.m. Friday (Nov. 7) in Hillsboro. Should they advance, the Bluejays would play Nov. 14 against top-seeded Kansas Wesleyan at Ottawa. The men's team finished sixth after Wednesday's 3-2 loss against Friends. The men's team plays at Ottawa Saturday (Nov. 8) and, with a win, would McPherson at Ottawa Nov. 14.
