The Goessel High School basketball teams trounced Elyria on the opening night of the Bluebird Classic Tuesday. The GHS boys won 57-23 and the girls won 45-16.The girls opened a 15-4 lead during the first quarter, as Karina Harvey and Kendra Flaming each scored four points. Goessel led 21-9 at half, and held the Eagles to just one made basket during the fourth quarter. Flaming scored 10 points during the second half and led all scorers with 16. Hillsboro High School basketball teams claimed their first victories of the season Tuesday night in the opening round of pool play in the Cheney Cardinal Classic. The Trojans played host to Smoky Valley, winning the girls’ game 38-37 while the boys claimed a 50-39 victory.As the score suggests, the girls’ game was particularly dramatic. With her team trailing by four points after Smoky’s Danielle DuMars sank a pair of free throws with 8.6 seconds left on the clock, Hillsboro’s Tiffany Rooker nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 5 seconds left. The Tabor College women's basketball team jumped out to a 40-33 halftime lead, but could not ward off Kara Beal and the Southwestern Moundbuilders in the second half. Tabor trailed 7-3 out of the gate, but regained the lead at 15-13 on a layup by Brittany Roth that followed on the heels of a score by Jordan Crosson.After an 18-18 tie, Tabor grabbed and held the advantage for the last 9:15 of the first half and the first 8:26 of the second half before giving way to Beal, who nabbed the lead with a layup-and-1. Beal gave Southwestern the lead for good, 52-49, with a 3-pointer with 7:01 to go, but the Bluejays held their ground.

The Tabor College men's basketball team overcame a sluggish start to defeat the Southwestern Moundbuilders 75-66 Saturday night in Hillsboro. The win boosts the Bluejays to 1-1 in conference play.Tabor scored only twice during the first 6:35, and trailed 22-4 when Alwyn Jordan buried back-to-back 2-pointers to cap a 22-4 run. But the Bluejays rally began on the defensive end, behind imposing post play from Zack Vanselow, who swatted five shots during the first half of play. Vanselow and Orson Thomas scored back-to-back baskets 23 seconds apart, and the Bluejays perimeter shooters caught fire. Led by Kendall Voth and Craig Banman, and with a multitude of others contributing at key moments throughout the game, the Goessel High School boys basketball team took down the Northern Heights Wildcats 57-53 Friday night in Goessel.It looked like a rout toward the end of the first half, when Voth leaked out of the halfcourt set play to receive a baseball-style inbounds pass that covered the length of the court. Voth scored the layup uncontested, and the Bluebirds led 29-15. Roman Murray knocked down a 3-pointer for Heights on the next possession, and the visitors closed the gap to seven, 29-22.
