Malone lifts TC women over Spires

Chelsea Malone lifted the Tabor College women's team to a 38-37 win despite a tough shooting night for everyone involved. Trailing 37-36 with time running out, Andrea Robinson attacked the basket with a dribble drive, but could not put the shot in—but Malone tracked down the offensive rebound, squared her shoulders and banked home the right-wing winner as her momentum carried her out of bounds. It was Malone's only basket of the night.

Ryder Owen Reece, infant son of Casey and Hollie Reece, died Wednesday, Dec. 31.

A private service will be held at Wesley Memorial Chapel at Wesley Medical Center.

He is survived by his parents; grandparents Charlie and Cindy Rice and Shelli Dechant; aunts, Hilarey and Travis Friesen and Hope Dechant; uncles Chip and Amy Reece, Chance Reese, great-grandparents Frances Norris, Marvin and Clara Dechant; Gary and Shirley Carlson, Ed and LaQuetta Siebert.

 

Hillsboro boys win, girls lose, at Hoisington

Sophomore Ben Bebermeyer came off the bench and scored 18 points in the first half, and a team-high 22 for the game to spark the Hillsboro boys to a 70-36 win at Hoisington on Tuesday night (Jan. 6).

The Trojan girls, meanwhile, never did find their spark, and dropped a 37-24 decision to the Cardinals.

In the boys’ contest, Hillsboro led only 4-0 through the first three minutes, despite forcing four consecutive Hoisington turnovers to start the contest. Bebermeyer then entered the game and drained a 3-pointer at the 4:56 mark.

He added two more 3-pointers and a 2-pointer before the quarter was over, accounting for half of the scoring in the Trojans’ 22-5 lead at the first break.

DEATH: Gladys Jantz, 90

Gladys Jantz, 90, lifetime educator, died Friday, Jan. 2, at Kidron Bethel in North Newton.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church with pastor David Plett officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. in Gnadenau Cemetery, rural Hillsboro.

The family will receive guests from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Jost Funeral Home, Hillsboro.

She was born July 10, 1918, to Henry and Lydia (Nickel) Groening at Lehigh. On May 1, 1938, she was married to Harvey Jantz, who predeceased her in 1998.

She is survived by a daughter, Delora and husband Jerry Decker of North Newton; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established for the library at Hills­boro Mennonite Brethren Church...

DEATH: Cathryn L. Hurst, 76

Cathryn L. Hurst, 76, homemaker, died Thursday, Jan. 1, at Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church, Hillsboro, with pastor Steve Schroeder officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. at Gnadenau Cemetery, rural Hillsboro.

The family will receive guests from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Jost Funeral Home, Hillsboro.

She was born March 23, 1932, to William G. and Anna (Lichty) Martin at Bowmansville, Pa. On Dec. 22, 1951, she was married to John B. Hurst, who survives in Hillsboro.

She also is survived by a son, Mike and wife Karla of Hills­boro; a daughter Sheryl and husband Rick Duerksen of Perkasie, Pa.; brothers Irvin, Milton, Ray, Earl, Jim and Bill...
