DEATH: Ronald L. Break, 79

Ronald L. Break, 79, a retired state employee, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Robert Dole Veterans Administration Hospital in Wichita.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Florence Hillcrest Cemetery in Florence with pastor Phil Smith officiating. No visitation will be held.

He was born Aug. 18, 1929, to Ernest and Pearl (Caley) Break in Florence. On Oct. 30, 1955, he was married to Marian Atkins, who survives.

DEATH: Elmer P. Zehr, 88

Elmer P. Zehr, 88, a teacher, and business owner, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Hospice House in Hutchinson.

Services will be at 11 a..m. Monday, Feb. 9, at Hesston Mennonite Church, 309 S. Main, Hesston, with pastors John Murray, Cheryl Hershberger and Fred Obold officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, in Eastlawn Cemetery at Hesston. Visitation is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Miller Funeral Home in Hesston.

He was born Jan. 19, 1921, to Emanuel and Emma (Brenneman) Zehr at Bright Ontario, Canada. On Oct. 27, 1942, he was married to Violet Bender. She predeceased him. In January 2005, he was remarried to Emily Hughes, who survives him.

DEATHS: Dorothy Pankratz, 77

Dorothy Pankratz, 77, homemaker, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, in Hillsboro.

A graveside service is planned for 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church, 300 Prairie Pointe.

She was born June 13, 1931, to Herman J. and Sara B. (Eitzen) Funk in Hillsboro. On May 27, 1952, she was married to Allen W. Pankratz, who survives.

She also is survived by daughter Barbara and Lonnie Thiessen of Wichita, son Jerel of Hillsboro, daughter Krista and Max Heinrichs of Hillsboro; two sisters, Ruby Graumann of Hillsboro and Luella Gunther of Reedley, Calif; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at Jost Funeral Home.

Hillsboro tames Lions twice

Both Hillsboro High School basketball teams looked sharp following a week off, sweeping a pair of games at Lyons on Tuesday night (Feb. 3).

In the girls’ game, Tiffany Rooker and Dakota Kaufman each scored 13 points to fuel the Trojans past the Lions by a 41-23 margin. HHS led 8-6 after one quarter, but Rooker and Kaufman combined for nine second-quarter points to bump the margin to 20-10 by intermission.

The lead was 28-15 after three quarters and Hillsboro led by as much as 39-17 when Frannie Gottsch completed a traditional three-point play with 4:09 left in the contest.

HHS shot 58 percent (18-31) from the field for the game while holding the Lions to 32 percent (8-25) as the Trojans improved to 7-6 for the year.

Goessel boys top Berean 54-48

The Goessel High School boys basketball team used strict defense in the second quarter to secure a 54-48 home win Tuesday night (Feb. 3) against Berean Academy. After the first quarter ended in an 8-8 draw, the Bluebirds outscored Berean 10-6 to lead 18-14 at halftime. The Bluebirds added a point to their lead with a 15-14 third quarter, and aced Berean again in the fourth.

Austin Unruh scored 20 points on two 2-pointers and 16 free throws as Berean lacked an answer for the Bluebirds power forward. Travis Fensky scored 10.

The GHS girls fell by a 47-40 final margin, as Berean standouts Wilgers and Eilert proved too much to handle, scoring 15 points apiece. After a 9-9 first quarter in which Kendra Flaming scored seven, Berean rattled...
