Last-second shot lifts HHS girls over Remington in sub-state opener

Allie Faul’s 3-point basket in the final seconds allowed the Hillsboro girls to escape with a 45-42 win over Remington Tuesday night in the first round of sub-state play.

The game was a work of art for the Trojans—as in “A Tale of Two Cities” or even “Beauty and the Beast.” The first half was the beautiful part, as the Trojans canned their first 10 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers by Faul.

Kansas Wesleyan ended the Tabor College women's basketball seasonSaturday night, with a 16 points, 10 rebounds double-double by KaylaenDittmer powering the Coyotes to a 74-54 victory. Despite thelopsidedness of the final score, the Bluejays forced K-W to ride itsstarters more heavily than a team preparing to face tournament top-seedSterling would prefer. And while Wesleyan dominated the scoreboard fromthe outset, Tabor put together several stretches of highly effectiveplay—especially after coach Shawn Winter turned loose a press defensemidway through the second half.

DEATH J.C. Heyman, 73

J. C. Heyman, 73, employed 30 years with the Kansas Turnpike Authority, died Thursday, Feb. 26, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 2, at Burns United Methodist Church with pastor Jim Bush officiating. Visitation is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Zeiner Funeral Home. Burial will be at Ebenezer Cemetery near Burns.

He was born March 7, 1935, in Newton and raised by his grandparents Calvin and Hattie Heyman. On July 7, 1962, he was married to Sandra Heath, who survives.

Other survivors include son Jim Heyman and grandson Steven all of Burns.

Memorials may be sent to Burns United Methodist Church in care of Zeiner Funeral Home, 205 Elm, Marion, KS...

With a 39-19 win Monday night at Hope, the Goessel High School girlsbasketball team advanced to the semifinal round of the 1A SoutheastRegional tournament at Burrton, but lost to top-seeded HutchinsonCentral Christian 54-31 Thursday. With a first-round bye, thetop-seeded Goessel boys will meet Hutchinson Central Christian at 7:30p.m. tonight (Feb. 27).

The Centre girls defeated Marais des Cygnes Valley 46-20 Monday toset up a meeting with Waverly Thursday at Madison. Waverly ended theCentre boys season 71-46 Monday night.

TC women extend season with last-second win at Southwestern

The Tabor College women's basketball team overcame a 10-pointfirst-half deficit to win on Jordan Crosson's layup with 3 seconds leftThursday night at Southwestern. The Bluejays and Moundbuilders combinedfor 85 points on 27 percent shooting, but produced a remarkablyentertaining 43-42 final score in spite of their offensive struggles.

The way Southwestern shot—a 6-for-32 festival of bricks from 3-pointrange, and just 11-for-49 from the field—a post-game party thrown bythe Moundbuilders would probably have been no good, had they won. Evenso, Southwestern led 20-10 on the strength of back-to-back triples byAndrea Smith and Jordan Cossman. Tabor fought off a case of happy feetthat led to at least five traveling violations early...
