Marie Klassen Wiens, 87, formerly with the Mennonite Central Committee, died Saturday, May 23, in Hillsboro.A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church, 300 S. Prairie Pt., Hillsboro.
She was born July 9, 1921, to Henry and Katherina (Fast) Klassen in Rosenhof, a small village in the Mennonite Slavgorod settlement in Siberia, Russia. In 1948, she was married to Frank Wiens, who predeceased her.

William E. Davis, 85, an electronics foreman, died Sunday, May 24, at his home in Marion.Visitation and Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, and Mass is at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, both at Holy Family Parish, St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Marion. Graveside services are at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Shawnee.
He was born May 28, 1923, to William S. and Ethel M. (McGrew) Davis in Keystone, Mo. On Oct. 28, 1946, he was married to Mary Transue, who survives.
Other survivors include son Jim and Jeanette Davis of Marion; daughters Mary and Tom Blandin of Lubbock, Texas and Jacqueline and Bret Cortright Sr. of Shawnee; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Zeiner Funeral Home of Marion is...
Pairings released for Class 3A state softball and baseball

The pairings were released today (Thursday) for the Class 3A state tournaments for softball and baseball.SOFTBALL
The Hillsboro Trojans (13-10) will make their first-ever appearance in the state tournament as the No. 8 seed and will face the undefeated and highly touted No. 1 seed, Thomas More Prep at 5 p.m. Friday, May 29, at the Twin Oaks Complex (Field A) in Manhattan.
If the Trojans get past TMP, they would play the winner of No. 4 Osage City (18-3) and No. 5 Silver Lake (18-4) at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The third-place game would be played at noon Saturday (Field B) and the championship game would be played at 1 p.m. (Field A).

Christmas came early for the young Hillsboro High softball team. The Trojans capitalized on six Council Grove errors to score seven runs in the top of the sixth inning, propelling them to a 9-5 regional championship victory Wednesday evening at Marion.The win marks the first state-tournament berth in program history for HHS.
Hillsboro was trailing 5-2 entering the sixth. Tara Heinrichs started the improbable rally by reaching first base on an error by the Braves’ third baseman. Taylor Nikkel and Courtney Weber also reached on errors to load the bases.

Junior left-hander Jacob Edwards pitched a two-hit shutout to fuel Hillsboro to a 5-0 win over Beloit and the Trojans’ first trip to the Class 3A state baseball tournament since 2003.Edwards struggled with his control at the start, walking two batters and loading the bases on an infield hit when he failed to cover first base on a high chopper to first. But a strikeout and a failed steal attempt of home got him out of the jam.
In the second inning, Edwards allowed a single to the leadoff hitter, but that was the last base hit Beloit enjoyed the rest of the night. Edwards finished with a season-high nine strikeouts and scattered six walks.
