Hillsboro and Centre girls open state play Thursday

The two Marion County high school girls’ teams that qualified for their respective state tournaments Saturday will both open play Thursday afternoon.

CLASS 3A

Hillsboro, the No. 3 seed at 21-2, will tip off against No. 6 Caney Valley (18-5) at 4:45 p.m. in the Hutchinson Sports Arena. If the Trojans win, they would play the winner of No. 2 Burlington (22-1) and No. 7 Holcomb (17-6) at 3 p.m. Friday. The winner of that semifinals matchup will play for the championship at 4 p.m. Saturday. The semifinals loser will play for third place at noon Saturday.

The quarterfinal games on the other side of the bracket are: No. 1 Atchison County Community of Effingham (22-1) will play No. 8 Beloit (17-6) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and No. 4 Garden Plain (21-2) and No. 5 Silver Lake (19-4) will play at 8:15 p.m.

CLASS 1A - Division I

As the eighth seed, Centre (14-9) will take on No. 1 Hoxie (21-1) at 3 p.m. Thursday in White Auditorium on the campus of Emporia State University. If the Cougars win, they would play the victor between No. 4 Spearville (19-3) and No. 5 Pike Valley of Scandia (18-5) in the semifinals at 3 p.m. Friday. The championship game begins at 4 p.m. Saturday and the third-place game at noon.

The quarterfinal games on the other side of the bracket are: No. 2 Waverly (21-2) vs. No. 7 Centralia (15-9) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and No. 3 St-John-Hudson (21-2) will play No. 6 Caldwell (17-7) at 8:15 p.m.
