The Goessel High School basketball teams trounced Elyria on the opening night of the Bluebird Classic Tuesday. The GHS boys won 57-23 and the girls won 45-16.
The girls opened a 15-4 lead during the first quarter, as Karina Harvey and Kendra Flaming each scored four points. Goessel led 21-9 at half, and held the Eagles to just one made basket during the fourth quarter. Flaming scored 10 points during the second half and led all scorers with 16. Aspen Frey and Karis Janzen both totaled 7.
Niko Herman tallied 10 points in the first half and the boys outscored Elyria 37-13. Craig Banman scored six in the third quarter and led all scorers with 15. Kendall Voth reached double-figures with 10 points. Weston Hiebert grabbed 15 rebounds and paced the Bluebirds to a 42-19 advantage in the category.
The other games Tuesday at Goessel saw the Burrton girls defeat Veritas Christian 52-15 and the Burrton boys top Veritas 62-43. The Bluebirds play Veritas on Friday and Burrton on Saturday.
